Hi

Can someone tell me what's the difference between these two engines?

I can't seem to find any info on the N47T.

Thanks

*edit* Sorry if this is a dumb question

I was wondering the same, all I can find is that it was a technical update, but nothing on what was actually updated.

Duh , but what technical update?
engine internals or externals?
Read my past above. I don't know. And guessing is not a viable answer imho

From what I can gather from online resources, the update was an attempt to address the timing chain issues with the N47.

One will make you cry, one will put a smile on your face.

N47 is the one plagued by timing chain stretching because of strain imposed by HPFP. They also like running bearings, there was a recall for these at some point in time. '08 to early '10 cars - known as the 130kW version

N47T is the updated one. '10 onwards, carried over to F series with some small modifications. These are pretty bulletproof and don't suffer (as far as I'm aware) from timing chain issues. It has a much better ECU as well - known as the 135kW version.

Thanks Ratslaaf. That's good to know! They didn't upgrade the gearbox by any chance to handle more torque:rollsmile:

What preventative maintenance can one do to prevent the timing chain from stretching? Is there an upgraded HPFP maybe? And the bearings :blueCry:?

And can the ECU be tweaked to the same spec as the better one?

There was a campaign for some N47 engines, not sure if it's still valid. Not all were affected to be honest.

Nope, there's a massive difference between the two ECUs. Your car runs piezo injectors and the later ones were pintle injectors, totally incompatible, so is the wiring harness.

All this being said, there's a lot of N47's on the road. Yes there were some issues but I am known to sometimes make a storm in a teacup

ECU can't be tweaked to the newer ones spec but you can do SW on it.
