He'll bent on a 320d (when I find the one that suits me) and curious to know what approach/driving style to take?!

Do you drive a diesel any different to a petrol variant?

Your thoughts...

yes cant rev as high as a petrol, golf tdi runs out of steam at 3800rpm.
idea is to change gears quicker.

I prefer Diesel...in fact - it would be wiked to have a 3.0 twin turbo version in my Zed...

yeah you drive it a bit differant, since you know you can smoke any petrol car out there at the lights..

(runs and dives for cover under the nearest bed to avoid incoming flames.. )

:) :)

yup diesel have a lot more torque that petrol engines, but this should also be noted that diesel engines are mostly turbocharged nowadays, so you can't really compare petrol to turbo-diesels.

Each has its own merits and you need to decide what you want to live with.

I would also suggest comparing a turbo-petrol to a turbo-diesel, for example a BMW 320d vs Audi A4 2.0T

Well iv moved over from a S3 to a 320d
and im quite happy with my oil burner

You kinda have the best of bothe worlds owning a diesel
you have the low down torque and the fuel economy to go with it

The nice thing of the diesel is the low down torque, so you have power from low in the revs, so even with a 1.6 ton car, you can pull away in 2nd, plus when going up a hill, no matter what gear you are in, you can just flatten your foot and feel the pull up the hill.

When doing spirited driving, you must just watch the revs, cause if you dont shift shortly after 4000, the diesel smothers itself. 1st gear is very short in the 320d

wonder how 335d vs 335i will pan out

I guess once again you need to compare apples to apples. The current 335i is a single turbo 3.0 petrol while the 335d has 2 turbos, but still a 3l capacity.

So yeah, the current 330d vs 335i are quite close in terms of config and price, even though their badges are a bit misleading.

535d with the 8 speed auto would be just

The 335i and 335d will differ in price by more than 10%... The diesel has two sequential turbos, the N54 had 2 parallel turbos which has no benefits above the current N55 single turbo setup, except for space requirements (if the N55 had a turbo of equivalent size to the sum of the two of the N54).

Sequential turbos has a significant benefit over parallel turbos in terms of power band and boost levels and efficiency. The downside is that they are much less reliable in petrol configurations due to the need for valves and much elevated exhaust gas temperatures of the petrol. This makes them somewhat impractical for use in petrol engines, which is why most OEM twin-charged (sequential) cars use a supercharger for the first stage, like the VW Polo GTI.

Remember the 330d was stock on the track while the 335i had the Mpack on....

The price differ is R48k not worth that diff between the two cars :)....

A lot of it has to do with personal preferences too. We can spend lots of time discussing the merits of each, but at the end of the day, BMW make some excellent motors - either way, whether it's petrol or diesel.

However, the average "Joe" on the street often compares the wrong type of vehicles based on the badge alone (e.g. 320i vs 320d or 330i vs 330d) - which often leads to the wrong conclusion that D > i ...
