About a year back I noticed this strange diesel like smell in the mornings when I got into my 2002 E46 320d. First it was just in the morning s but later it got worst. I would open the engine bay but would not be able to pinpoint where the smell comes from.
Decided one afternoon to take of all the covers and look for the cause of the strange smell. This was after I already checked the car’s interior and the area around the pollen filter. Started the car with the covers of and then saw my No4 injector getting a bit wet on top. Thought I’ll just replace the plastic connector but the dealer sells all four connectors with the connecting pipes as one unit.
Bought it for R600 bucks I think, and the smell is gone.
Looking back, I should probable just replaced the leaking o-ring. On the other hand, replacing everything new give one just that extra piece of mind.
When I bought the parts there were only 2 in the whole of Gauteng and I think in Cape Town a few as well.
Don’t think it is a common break down item so they keep low stock levels on it. I bought one so there is only left.
So if you have a strange diesel smell, check you diesel return line on you injectors.
