Diesel quality

Hi guys (and girls)

You've probably discussesed this already, but me being new here, please share your opinion:

What difference would it make using 500ppm diesel v 50ppm diesel. There seems to be conflicting views: (1) 50ppm is better and you'd have to service less regularly, but it might not lubricate enough or (2) 500ppm only impacts the emissions with the 50ppm being cleaner

Been only using 500ppm in my 2007 e90 320d for five years, didn't have any problems or need for more regular services. But I think they are gonna say only 50ppm for the new f30....

50 ppm is better. It has less sulphur, sulphur gets into the oil and degrades it. That is where new diesels longer service intervals come from.
50 ppm has less sulphur that lubricates. BUT they add additives to increase the lubrication.
50ppm is better than 500 ppm. Especially in new diesels with long service intervals.

Like above. 500ppm will clog the diesel particulate filter (in the exhaust) more quickly, making the car go into limp mode and possibly killing the turbo. For the modern cars, 50ppm is better.

Thing is, what is worse, contaminated oil from 500ppm diesel, or possibly lower lubrication of the fuel system from 50ppm diesel? Bearing in mind that it is most likely less costly to replace fuel system components that rebuilding a prematurely worn out engine due to oil contamination. Personally if I had a modern BMW diesel I would stick to 50ppm diesel and change the oil more frequently - at least once a year or half the usual service interval...

used only 50 ppm on my tdi golf, well when the turbo started going for the second time in 42000km sold it and bought a petrol.

my wifes navara,we put 1 tank of 500ppm for every two tanks 50ppm,but we change oil and filters every 7500km,
so far 159000km and still no problems with the turbo.

When I got my 2012 320d, the salesman recommended that I only use 50ppm for the vehicle and that's what I've been doing. Oddly though, around the northern JHB area, the fueling stations I use, don't seem to have 500pm or is that only available at the separate pump? If you getting a new vehicle, I reckon BMW they would recommend you stick with 50ppm rather than 500ppm.

Cheers.
