Diesel Prices ...

Hello Guys

Being a new diesel driver, I've started to notice the pricing that many fuelling stations put up. Is it just me or do they all only put up the price of their 500ppm diesel? I only use 50ppm and it always seems to cost more than the price I saw driving into the fuel station.

Cheers.

I've never come across a filling station that puts up 50PPM pricing - only 500PPM :thumbdo:

Only 500ppm prices are put up. 50ppm is always more expensive. But I found that the Total filling stations are normally cheaper with their 50ppm diesel than other places and I avoid Sasol completely as their prices are ridiculously inflated.

That's strange, I've only tried Sasol and Engen stations and it seems Sasol is cheaper, or it could just be the one service station on Rivonia road that is the exception, rather than the rule.

What did you pay. Just out of interest, I filled up yesterday at the Engen in Lonehill - R10.99 per liter for 50PPM. Normally I find the Sasol garages more expense too.

Damn that is good! Last time I was there (1 week ago) it was R11.23 at that spot on Rivonia road. But when I filled up at Sasol on Bowling road last night (before the price hike) it was R11.33 at their pumps... :yuck:

I'm thinking you guys are right....I should visit more Engen garages.

10.99 is a good price. I paid 11.16 on Saturday. Tank is still almost full, so I'll only get the shock of the new prices next week sometime. Its scary to think that we think 10.99 is a good price...

Oh btw, a friend of mine filled at Sasol in benoni somewhere last week friday. He paid 12.16. When he confronted the manager the guy told him that he doesnt care, because diesel is not regulated.

I'd hate to be low on fuel in Benoni after price hike tomorrow.... gosh!

If you want to risk truck grade diesel, go to the truck stops. In Cape Town the truck stop is at least 50c cheaper than the cheapest 500ppm. I use it for my Land Rover, but I am not sure how good it would be in a BMW diesel. You hear stories that they mix parafin in the diesel. I have not had any problems with the Land Rover.

The thing is that it would change from month to month. Hence we need to put a date to it. Also, while some garages might be cheaper in some months, there is nothing stopping them from increasing prices in the next month.

However, I'm sure if we have some monthly comparison, it should give a good enough indication.

That's not a bad idea, especially since diesel is not regulated. We might even be able to influence certain garages if we have enough momentum. I've started recording the R/litre on the receipts I get when I refuel so I might be able to get some basic trending figures soon.

Just out of curiosity, there isn't a fanatic here that owns a garage in the JHB north area is there? I reckon if I must spend the money, I might as well spend it to benefit a fellow fanatic.

I dont like using anything lower than 50ppm. The higher the number the more the sulpher content. The more sulpher, the more acid ends up in your oil and the injectors also dont like 500ppm. Thats why most people do more regular oil changes on their diesels. Lower sulpher also burns cleaner.

Good idea. Maybe make a list, if any, of all the stations.

There is a small sasol garage in Elsburg which i go past on my way to work, not the best looking of Sasol's but i dont mind cause they sell their 50ppm for 10.84...its still hefty but compared to what the other garages are charging.

While waiting for my take-away at an Engen one stop, was chatting to the garage owner/manager and asked him why his diesel was more expensive than other garages. He says that he has enough business with the current trucks coming there and he offers rebates on diesel to his contract customers - the other guys just pay the pump price - so it look like the "small guy" that gets screwed :thumbdo:

I never knew prices vary , I thought it would be fixed everywhere , interesting . I don't think this happens with petrol

Correct - petrol price is regulated. Diesel is not.

Good idea lets make a list. I am not too bother using 500pm been using it for 90% of the time in my 320d for 136000km+. There is a big price difference for example:

Total Klerksdorp 500pm = R11.08/l
Sasol Hartbeesfontein 500ppm = R10.59/l
Total Krugersdorp 50ppm = R11.40/l
Shell Klerksdorp 50ppm = R11.35/l

But guess I will start using only 50ppm when my F30 arrives. 14 more days....
