Diesel Particulate Filters

Hi, Just a general question. in the UK DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) are pretty much fitted to all cars here now and are causing no end of very costly problems for the vehicle owners all in the name of saving the planet.?? Nothing at all to do with generating millions of £s for the industry NO. just saving the planet?? My question is do South African cars run particulate filters?

im not sure but im guessing the newer cars have them...
here is SA we would just take them out if they broke the same as we do with CATs :)

You must only have the pre cats then. as if you simply remove the unit from the front pipe then the ecu goes into limp mode and will not come out of it until the unit is re fitted. I asked the question because we now have the software to totally remove all the DPF information from inside the engine control unit. Cars are failing over here with just 2000 miles on them so you can imagine the shit the owners of a 5 year old car are going to encounter.

Hi Guys

I see this thread died out a bit but i would like to also know. How exactly does this fit together in the sense of - Would i be able to do it myself or does it have to go into a shop for this. Would i be able to change to particulate filter myself ?

Depends - do you own a lift/ set of tall axle stands(4) and can you grind and weld airtight seams? If not then you will not be able to DIY this.

LOL hell no i dont own this. wish i did though. It would make getting underneath the car thi weekend a little easier as i need to change diesel fuel filter

next question

my aplogies for the silly questions, but does every 3 series have a DPF fitted in this country ?. Reason im asking is - it seems only some countries had this fitted in some 3 series models & other countries not due to diesel quality.

I drive the 320d e90 '06

question after this is

cost & where could one have this done ?

You most certainly have one, it will be in the header. You can remove it at noiseboys, but if the ECU detects it, you will have to find someone who can code that out.

alrighty then.....

seems to me a diesel is more a pain in the arse than anything else.

Can one get it serviced instead of having it removed ( i know itll give me a few more horses ), but i guess this coud tunr out quite costly at the end of the day

No. If you like, call bmw and ask them for a price. Then go to makro to buy an angle grinder and a welder, because you will have ample motivation after your call to BMW.

:biglol: okay so BMW have jokes

So then a de-cat is the way to go.

Out of interest sake, how does one know when to do it. I mean my car only has 97 000 km on now. I ran out of time before the kilos were done. I do about 30 000 a year.

Does it show any problems? It will easily last 160kkm. The filter is also regenerative, but for it to regenerate, you need to drive around 50km on the highway, and overtake some trucks at >3000rpm... If you only do short trips, it might get clogged to a point where it cannot regenerate anymore.

thats strange because i do a 1 week in the office & 2nd week work from home. the week i work from home, the car stands pretty much all the time in the garage, i do very little driving around that week. the trip to work & back is 120km ( highway travelling ) for a week straight & its the krugersdorp highway so i can maintain my speed & constant rpm

also every now & then i get a bee in the bonnet & give the car some beans for a 2km stretch & pretty much full throttle ( wont say where though - but at least im guaranteed of no cops ).

Let the car idle after hard driving, let it warm up before boosting especially in winter.

however it says i need to change it in 13 000km. Does this change when one resets the computer ?. I serviced the car myself last weekend & reset the oil service, cabin filter. All i need to do is just change the fuel filter on saturday cause i ran out of time on sun ( due to the air filter being somewhat - lets say stubborn to get out, took a good bloody 3 hours until i stripped my moer & just yanked it out the box ) the new one was much easier to fit as its much more pliable due the plastic still being soft.

Well, if the ECU tells you that the DPF is on its way out, I suggest you call someone that does mapping on these cars, like Xcede, and ask them how much they would charge just to disable all the DPF checking routines, and then have it removed.

am i right that this is the particle filter icon above ?. also when in the reset menu it gives the option of changing the date

i havent had an error but when resetting the oil service & cabin filter with the BC button the date changed for the above icon. As opposed to it being in 2013 somewhere its now showing somewhere next year.

Sorry for being a noob, but is this correct ?. Will that date shift out perhaps as the algorithm recalculates mileage vs time etc as time goes by. Ive only done since saturday ( service & computer reset ) about 35km
