Diesel engine decisions !!

Hi All

I had a 335i N55 and after that i had a X5 30D M57 Engine. The diesel Bug has got me Haaaaarrddd and now looking at a 330D. I am leaning towards a 330D with M57 Engine for some reason i just feel that Older engines and older Bmw's last longer. I feel that they were just built better. Thats why i prefer a E46 to a E90. So basically i want to know if my thoughts are correct or not ?

Engine aside, the auto gearboxes in the newer models just seem to get better and better - something to consider.

The 6 speed gearbox in the X5 with M57 i had it Flashed with Xhp and it was good imo i know its not as good as the eight speeds though

IMO you cant go wrong with the E46. Had one and till today very sad that I sold it for the E53 X5. It was an absolute beast on the freeway and surprisingly light on fuel. Got 6.7 l/100km after mapping it. Mine was the 6 speed manual though. Not sure about the mileage on the auto. Just stay away from the 5 speed GM auto, loads of gremlins with that box. The 6 speed ZF box is much better.

Friend of mine had the E90, also the 6 speed manual. Drove it once or twice. Obviously a much more luxurious but my mapped E46 topped it for me.

330d E90 LCI would be the best place to start. If your budget allows, go for the the F30.

The F30 330d can sit with ANYTHING on the open road. Endless torque, 8 gears and grips like an E39 M5 in the bendy stuff.

IMO, an E46 330d is going to cost to maintain.

E46 Auto box's on the diesels are made of mushrooms... passed 200k kms you into uncharted territory...

Thanks All for all your responses. I have made up my mind. I owned a E46 before was a 330i though. In my personal opinion an E46 is a special and unique Bmw i cant really tell you why but just something about the car !!!! So i will be looking for a 330d E46 Manual M-Sport obviously.

On the E90 330d, the M57 & N57 use the same g-box correct?
