Only use 95 on my car Gizmo. I have had the odd times where i couldnt find and had to go with 93. But certainly not a common trend.

I have heard of garages throwing 93 into their 95 tanks and selling it at 95 prices!!!:argh:

Your engine should have around 4 knock sensors to pull back timing if there is detonation. What is the compression of your motor?

Gizmo... From what I can find, looks like it is 10:1

Legacy...as per the web, it makes use of SFI injection

I am currently experiencing pinking with my 330i - well it seems to be pinking, was originally thinking that it was the dual mass flywheel since it sounds like a rattle, but both Auto Atlantic and SMG say that what I am hearing is mild pinking. Now from low revs under moderate load it does this, but generally around 1800 - 2500 rpm too. You have to be driving in a relatively quiet built up area with your window down to hear this.

Now while the engine pulls strongly, there are two noticeable hesitations while going through the lower to mid range revs - so all that I can think is that our fuel is just a tad too watered down for liking of these engines! Also, I have always heard this pinking noise since I've had the car, but it was very seldom, but lately, since the last few months it has been a fair bit more noticeable - then again, I have also been a lot more attentive and aware of this.

Another thing, I have been running the car on Engen 95 ULP since late last year, but have just switched back to Sasol 95 ULP to see if there is any difference which so far there isn't.

Did a google search and found a thread on a Z4 forum discussing this with the Z4 3.0si which also uses the the N52B30 engine...

Philip, I have to admit that the octane booster has definately made the difference thus far. I will continue to monitor and post findings here.

Hmm, maybe should give that a try too - reluctant to use additives and so on, but might be worth a go just to see if it makes a difference. Also, under normal driving conditions the car seldom gets to really flex its muscles, well not without scaring the p1ss out of other motorists. Oh, and next Saturday my car is no longer under motorplan! :fencelook:

Tank is coming to an end and the detonation isnt apparent at all. I blerry forgot to get more octane booster as I was hoping to have this average out over 3 tanks. Anyone know where I can get some in the Sandton area?

Rooi_Willie - I am definately of the opinion that our fuel is crap and we need to cater for this with additives :thumbdo:

I kept on hearing it now and then, especially under accelleration.

Was thinking it might be timing that was out. Will try to get some of that stuff and do my own testing. Must say, the last tank of fuel was 95 and I cant recollect hearing it....

I don't want to sound negative but I think its a problem with the fuel as well as BMW's direct injection system and not properly designed heads.

You saying that the poor design makes it more apparent on lower octane or that I am just lucky this time round?

The problem seems to come from the fact that since your injector is in the cylinder there is only air passing over the intake valves. In a normal engine with normal injectors you have both air+fuel passing over the intake valves and this keeps the valves clean.

Now for direct injection you basically tend to have carbon build up on the intake valves. This is quite a common problem on the Audi RS4 for example where the heads needs to be taken off and the carbon build up cleaned, some at around only 15k km. This carbon build up changes the performance of the valves and they tend to become extremely hot which could then lead to early detonation.

This is of course only a theory. Now if you would to fix the problem the heads of the car would need to be removed...

Abmi, have you tried this:

Get a can at Midas. It gets rid of ALL the water vapour and any dirt in your feul system.
You ad it to a tank of feul, and drive like your mother in law is behind you...

Its worth a try I would say... :dunno:
