Hi

I am new here. I have a 2002 BMW 318TI automatic (since new) and started experiencing heavy oil usage (no visible signs of leaking) since about 120,000 km's. Up to 5litres every 500 km's.

Despite numerous visits to BMW dealer (on Motorplan & post Motorplan) the problem persists and BMW SA has finally made the following offer.

They are prepared to pay 70% of the parts for the repairs & the dealer is willing to contribute R5000 towards the labour costs. I will have to bear the balance of the costs (+/- R15000 - R20000) .

A German BMW fanatic (on Facebook) offered the following inexpensive solution:

'Maybe ist the the valve cover gasket. This is a ofter problem with the N42 engine. if u change this cover so also change the vacuum pump at the same time'

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

thanks

Buddy it seems that you have a serious problem

What do you say at the garage Check the Petrol and fill up the oil. :fencelook:

If there is no leaks it must go somewhere. Is the car smoking excessively.

There must be a leak. With that amount of oil use.

5L per 500km. :nonono:

How can the balance that you have to pay be between R15k - R20k?

You could have the whole job done for less at a private mechanic.

5L per 500km's must be something more than just a tappet cover gasket.

My 318ti sweats alil at the rear of said gasket but nothing more.

Have your car steam cleaned and trace the leak, at the rate you are useing oil, the leak should be in plain sight.

O yes, welcome to the forum!!

Hi !
There are some good private mechanics in & around Cape Town who can give an answer to your problem.I use Reynolds BMW in Retreat & I'm sure the other members have other contact ,even if they can just tell you what the problem is ! Good luck

Boet, my motor was completely overhauled (ran a bearing because of that oil problem that these motors are notorious for. Cost me in total 25K..... That included PCV (i think its called that) valve, new big end bearings, head skimmed, new gaskets and so on. Have not looked back as it is stronger than ever before. Had it done at GMW in retreat.

? If your oil was being sucked into combustion, you would have one smokey car...?

When you say no visible leaks, I'm assuming the covers were taken off and inspected properly by either yourself or BMW? They have a nasty habbit of hiding oilslicks till you pull it off on a ramp.
