Dash Cams

Hi Guys

I am interested in putting a dash camera in my car and was wondering if anyone has fitted one to their car?

If so what is the best camera, and where is the best place to have it fitted.
(In JHB)

Thanks

Howsit,

I bought one recently. Its not a high end dash cam but it does its job. It records HD video up to 720p. Uses micro SD so storage capacity will depend on the size of the SD card you put in. Its a dual lens camera so you can set it up to record the inside of your car or the rear of your car while it is recording the front.

The camera connects to your cigarette lighter so you can set it up yourself. If you want to have the rear camera installed permanently then you might need to get someone to assist with running the cable to the rear windscreen.

See attached pic of the camera, I got the pic off the web.

I will post my setup later. I got this to play around with, hence I did not go for the top end brands like GoPro. It will depend on how much you want to spend.

I have had one in my car for over 2 year. recently upgraded.
from -Electroman
Price R1299.

Features to look for.
Nigh vision is bad on all of them with the small little led lights(pointless) car headlights good enough.
Loop recording 3/5/15 minutes. Mine is set to 5 min.
32g micro sd card gives me 10 hours before loop
Fast save button.
User friendly when playing back on device (this helps if you get pulled over by cops for not "stopping at stop street" Have used this several times.
Auto power linked to ignition of car.

the 699 ones are not hd only vga

almost like this. for 1800 you can get one with gps logger.

some footage from mine.
my first one was a cheapy claimed hd ( wasnt) new one is.

Some of the quality on the you tube is lowered by me due to large file size when upload.

I can clearly read any numberplate and as mine has 4 x zoom that is easy to access.

some stills taken with mine

Ps I have mailed several clips to companies that have delivery vehicles if I c them being idiots.

Here's a clip

I can set the video quality, VGA or HD. It has a G Sensor so if there's sudden change in motion it locks that video file so that it cannot be replaced during the loop recording.

Mine cost me R600 off bid or buy. Like I said, it all depends on the extent of which you will use it and how much you are willing to spend.

I would love to actually get something more permanent that is not so "visible" like a GoPro etc - with the number of bad drivers on the road, having a permanent dashcam can prove invaluable!!

I love the idea and have seen countless videos on YouTube recording UFO sightings, police brutality, road rage etc etc etc etc

I wonder though what the JMPD would have to say about this.... we all know that they hate having their picture taken :=):

Thanks for the reply guys.

I found a dash cam which looks good and has all the bell and whistles.
It is called a Blackvue DR380 G-HD, and it costs R2999. I will have to do some more research though

I like it cause its small and discrete, and I think it would be a good thing to have in the case of an accident or something else exciting ;)
