Damaged steering rack & stress

I had the worst car day of my life. Just the other day I was claiming that life is good in an F10 & today I'm not getting that vibe at all but stress in a broken F10.

Wife & I took our f10 down to KZN for Easter. Today while driving on gravel road to church i ran over what I had seen as a small stone. A second or less later we had to find ourselves flying a bit in the air after a big bang under the car. The car immediately reported a steering malfunction. That little stone turned out to be a boulder hidden in soft ground like a landmine.

I opened the cover underneath with the help of inlaws only to see a cracked steering rack (pics below hope they're clear). I was so dissapointed with myself, even now. The steering is now heavy & makes a terrible screeching sound. It felt like something being crushed everytime i tried to turn the steering wheel. I had to call insurance to tow the car because i could not drive it any longer. Now I'm counting costs in case insurance declines my claim;

1. How much is a complete steering rack for a 530d?
2. Is there a chance that it damaged even more stuff?
3. How could i have messed up my wife's car like this?
4. Has anyone ever ran into such problems & how did you get it fixed?

Insurance claim bud.. accidents happen don't stress..

Just crap to pay excess etc and risk of premiums increasing..

Fortunately you have insurance on the car...wait for the outcome of the claim.

Its always unsettling especially if one does not know the extent of the damage.

But its a machine....and it can be repaired. All the best man.

I hope insurance can cover. Had steering rack replaced on my F30 under motorplan and the parts alone cost around R40k.

Hope it gets sorted

Insurance should cover that unless you have hectic exclusions of some kind.

If not these can fortunately be found at any one of the scrapyards since there have been plenty of F10s sold in SA.

Worth checking sway bar, endlinks, control arms and struts if you took that hard of a knock. You are likely to get all of the above on your quote from wherever you take it to for the one side as well as possibly the shock tower mount (which should also be inspected at the very least). The way the sway bar sits on the F10, it is likely you have damaged or bent this if you have broken your rack as this sits "under" the rack. This is connected to other bits of your suspension

All of the above can be repaired. As Twinz points out - just a machine - it can be fixed.

Holding thumbs all goes smoothly with the claim.

On a lighter note, you are very brave taking her onto a gravel road LOL. I did this once with another car and although nothing went wrong, I now rent or borrow a bakkie on the rare occasions I need to brave slightly rough stuff nowadays :biglol:

Thank you all, the problem feels lighter now. I'll hear what BMW says when they open on Tuesday. Don't know why insurance to take the car to Newcastle when i live in Joburg.

The gravel road looked smooth after the local municipality worked on it for the holidays but it was just a trap. Lesson learnt, one should get themselves a 4x4.

That's hefty, only insurance wants to pay that amount. Been checking overseas as well, stuff can be cheap there. Hope they sort it out.

Mr Insurance came along and sorted me out. Will be picking the car in a few days, I was now in a lazy Dodge Journey, worst car ever.
