Cuts out while driving

My 328 e36 just dies while driving and its starting to seriously tick me off. I changed spark plugs, checked relays, checked fuel supply before and after injectors and everything looks good. whats funny is, that it dies so suddenly at any point of the rev range...the rev needle would start jumping around before it just drops straight to zero and attempting to kick-start it to life again does not work. It doesn't splatter out or jerk or anything, just completely dies out. After this it will not start and swing for about 3 minutes or so before eventually starting.

i only drive her weekends and for the two days ive probly pushed it out of traffic 10 times...

Changed the fuel filter yesterday...felt fixed at first but its just doing the same thing now
Any advise or help appreciated.

If your rev counter jump and drop to zero while the car is in gear still turning the engine it will most likely be an electrical fault. My friends Jettta was doing this all the time and the fuse box was at fault cutting the power to his engine. Just my 2c. Check for bad joints. Hope you find the fault soon as any inter fault can be a B!tch.

My previous e36 328i use to do something similar to yours, except while driving as soon as i pressed the clutch in and foot went off the accelerator the revs just drop dead to zero.

But back then I had a hole in the manifold, replaced that and the fuel pump and everything was sorted.

The only way to find out is by plugging it into a diagnostics machine and having the codes read.My money is on a cam shaft sensor though.

If it is then get an OEM sensor or else you will end up spending more money-BMW's don't like aftermarket sensors.....

please let us know if you sort the problem and what it was.Feedback can help others if they have a similar problem as you

I had the same issue on the e46 but it was the valvetronic control unit. Car just cut out at any given moment. Duno if thats on the E36. Just my 2c :)

E36's don't have the dreaded rattlers....I mean valvetronic engines-its N42 engines which is found in the 4 pot cars.He has an M52 block.

If it was the crank sensor then the car would most likely not start at all.If it was an airleak then the electrics would not cut out at any rev.

As I said get the codes read and it will point you in the right direction....my money is still on cam shaft sensor

A buddy of mine had a similar problem, He changed his Air Flow Meter and it was sorted :)

turned out to be a problem on the injector loom-some electrical short.

This is how i found the problem - The car killed out again and just would not start...with the ignition still on, i stuck my hand under the intake and gently tugged on the injector loom(i suspected an injector problem)..i could then hear the injectors ticking with every "gentle" movement of the loom. So the problem was that the loom killed power to the injectors and the car would die. Took the car to an auto-electrician who sorted out the loom and ive not had this problem since.

hope you guys get to the bottom of yours cause there's really alot of trial and error to be done - unless you have a diagnostics device:thumb:

Glad that you found the source to this problem and sorted it.

Hi Guys!!!
I've got the similar problem on my E36 320i 1995 model, it doesn't start, I think it's the cam shaft sensor. What's the difference between the camshaft sensor & crankshaft sensor? And what are the signs of the faulty knock sensors? Thanks in advance

What are prices on cam sensor and crank sensor :argh::cry:
