Total cost of Cruise alone was R8250....
All the adverts say that kids under 18 cruise free... This is not entirely true. Whilst they do not pay for the cruise ticket, they do pay Port Fees. These are about R600 per child.
If you are cruising to Cape Town or to nowhere (The ship goes out to sea and makes a huge U Turn) you will not need a Passport. To all other destinations, you will need a passport for you, your wife and the kids.
Also, you should know that the Currency on the cruise is US Dollar. You can pay via credit card, debit card or cash. you do not need to take dollars onto the ship with you, as they will automatically convert your South African Rands into dollars. if you are paying via Credit card or debit card, you will need to inform your bank in advance that you will be going on a cruise and that they will need to authorise your payments.
The best way though is to take cash on board.
Whatever payment method you choose, they will load your money onto a card which is also your room card. so whenever you want to pay for something, you swipe your card instead of using cash.
you pay separately for all Bottled Water, Alcoholic and Cold Drinks (coke, fanta, and that sort of stuff)... and also pay for the ice cream on the ship. You will NOT pay for food and coffee / Tea. There are also Water Dispensers with ice which you do not pay for.
FOOD: There are a few restaurants on the ship. Two of these are buffets, whilst the remainder (dunno how many) are normal sit down restaurants. The buffets offer a wide range of foods, with the food at the buffet being much better than the sit down restaurants(small portions dont suit a big boy like me)...
This is definitely an excellent way to travel. But remember to carry the seasickness tablets (lots if you can). even if you think that you have a strong constitution... you will still get seasick... best be prepared.
The cruise season ends around March / Mid April at which time the two cruise ships operating out of South Africa (MSC Opera and MSC Sinfonia) leave for Europe. They return toward the end of October and will again operate till around March / April... the following year.
