crank main pulley (vibration damper)

Hi there everyone, I hope this will help a bit! I recently had a problem with my car "BMW 320d E46" it broke the main pulley on the crank "vibration damper" I went to the dealers to find out what is it going to cost for a new one! I got a heart attack when they told me its going to cost R8500 just for the pulley! I then decided to shop around for a better price! The first one I wound was at "gold wagen" for R2500 u can really go and visit their website "goldwagen.co.za" they stock quite a bit of bmw parts and the parts is of good quality!The second place I wound was in JHB they ask R1500 for the pulley!I am not sure what's the places name or nr so ill post it asap! This is NEW parts and not second hand! So I believe its worth while Putting it in was a bit more tricky you need special tools to lock the crank the best option is to go to BMW they ask +- R1000 labor! Good luck

I swopped mine out on my Sorento and it's R1500 for the pulley from the dealers. Dunno where BMW gets to R8500.

I made a bracket with 30x5mm flat bar and some grade 8.8 bolts to loosen the crank bolt. It sure it tight!

You can say that a gain! We could call the dealers "stealers" these days! I research the pulley a bit and I got hold of a workshop manual (in spanish) what I could figure out was very little but I know you have to lock the crank with some special tool on the timing chain and after you put the pulley back you need to torque it again! So I phoned the stealers and the asked me a R1000 to install it! I reckon I still saved R6000 so I was happy to pay that!

Here's a pic of what I did. The bracket's long arm rested on the chassis, which was a solid locking position. Note that the long bar was straight, but with the force applied to loosen the crank bolt, it actually bend, but only until the bracket 'bit' around the socket.
