Cracked side mirror

Hey guys, long story short, I cracked my driver side mirror. Just the glass itself, everything else is fine. I'd have thought it was a quick fix, but BMW quoted me 3.5k.
I honestly don't feel like shelling out that much money for a piece of glass. Any suggestions?

I went to my local glass cutters, and they cut a piece of mirror glass to size for me, and fitted it for R100. It's road worthy now, but its not that wide angle glass, so everything looks a bit closer than it should.. there has to be a cheaper alternative.. I ordered online, but it's going to take a while to get here, and I want to sell my car soon.
Spare shops only sell the whole unit, not just the glass. Any ideas?

BMW F20, with no mirror heating or auto-dim.

i think BMW is the only option, trying to sell the car with a non OEm piece is gonna bite you in the ass.

I wonder if it's covered in the motor plan somehow... Probably not. How does a piece of glass cost 3.5k :thumbdo: the only bad part about owning a BMW is the prices they charge for the small stuff

motorplan covers the cars life with respect to service and maintenance not if you nuke a mirror.

Maybe BMW dont supply the glass on its own.

That could be the case. The sad thing is, I didn't actually do anything as far as I know. It was just cracked one day, no damage anywhere else. Maybe somebody knocked the glass in a parking lot or something. Not keen on dealing with insurance over something like this. Guess I'll just fork out then.

The glass do have individual part numbers though (separate from the mirror housing).

What part number did BMW quote you on?
51167285002?
Note that this part number is used on 1 & 2 series F20/F21/F22/F23, M2 F87, 3 & 4 series F30/F32/F33/F34/F36.
It is $139.10 at ECS Tuning, so ~ R1900.

They all seem to be heated though. Sure yours are not?

Perhaps check at a salvage yard.....

I tried, but same deal. They only sell the whole unit, even if it is scrapped from another car.

Well, I may be trading my car in, and the dealer said that I musnt worry about this sort of thing, as they will fix it their end for cheaper. Will probably influence my trade in value though.
I'd much rather do a private sale, but I'll see what they offer.

I would check MD in Wynberg Sandton or Beemo's - salvage yards for BMW's - sure they would be able to help. If its just the glass you need it would not matter if the housing was a different colour - just xfer the glass, if at a respectable price that is.

Well when the guy took it out to put on the cheapie glass, there were no wires or anything on that plastic bracket that pops out.
Just got a quote from BMW for 2.1k for the glass. Think I'll just go that route. Thanks guys :coolShake:

Still a lot for a piece of glass. I've assumed that at least part of it would be for the heating element.

Looks like there's a wire connection on the back of the part # listed above (not sure if that's the one you will be getting). All of the options that I've seen has the word "heated" in it. Assumed it would be standard on modern BMWs.

Curved toughened(shatterproof) glass is not cheap or easy to manufacture.
