Could it be timing chain E90 323i

Hi guys, have my e90 323 2007 model for a year now, recently it started making a knocking noise when starting the vehicle and when switching it of, a few times the knocking lasted like 5 minutes and eventually stopped after switching the car off and on again.

Could this be the timing chain on its way out?

When last have you done an oil change?
Was the correct 5w30 oil used?

Chain noises dont go away. They usually keep rattling.

You could also be hearing your lifters.


If the oil is older than 15k km, I suggest an oil change.
Also pull the codes off. You could have vanos issues showing faults.

Oil change was done not to long ago and yes i used bmw oil. so went to the workshop yday and they said its probably the Vanos timing gears, is there anywhere that I could get that? I tried masterparts and goldwagen in durban but they do not keep it.

I suggest a second opinion by a reputable bmw mech.
Vanos gear units are very very expensive and only available at dealer (new).


The N52 motors are prone to vanos solenoid failures. I've had mine fail 2 years back.
Mech also told me the vanos unit is faulty.

Is it a ticking noise or a knocking noise?if its a ticking noise then its your valve lifters,all e90 6 cylinder petrol engine between 2005 and 2008 model suffer tpengine ticking noise

Im going with hydraulic lifters or vanos, i would suggest a full engine flush and some good oil

I think I need to do an extra oil service. MP says only in 14k km but my F30 makes the same ticking noises.

Comes from the top and side of the engine, two different noises.

Bmw has an oil service special on till end of September so now is the right time if you want to do the extra service
