Cops pulling over Z4s and the response to laser jammers

Hi People,

I've gotten my Z4 for about a month now, and have been pulled over by cops 3 times already for no reason other than to try and solicit a bribe. I have come to terms with the fact that I will be pulled over often, and need to make sure the car is in top form so as to not give the cops any excuse for what ever it is they want.

I'm thinking about fitting a anti laser. I'm in a bit of a dilemma, maybe you guys have some advice.

My question is when you get pulled off for god knows what reason, do these cops look out for these devices? And if they do find it, and by some miracle actually know what it is, what sort of response do they have to it.

Thanks,
Kamal

I got pulled over lots of time when I had my E36 M3 and got lots of k@k about the jammers. I played innocent and pretented not to know that it was illegal - told them I bought the car like that and will take it off now that I know about it being illegal.

Strangely enough, I also got them on the X5 and even though I got pulled over for random checks at roadblocks, they did not bother with the detecters. Whereas on the M3, they used to actually look for them.

My advise is that you should get the "PDC" type that's difficult to spot easily. Certain cars unfortunately attract attention and you will get k@k from the cops. The other solution is to drive a Tazz :)

Howzit chaps,

Over the years I've done loads of research and had jammers on my cars since 2003.
Bell Laser Pro 904 on E46 320i
Escort Laser Shifter ZR3 on E46 330i
Escort Laser Shifter ZR3 on E87 130i
and now the Laser Star Diffuser / PDC on my E46 M3. Installed it over the weekend.

Yes, I'm afraid freerider is correct. The cops can arrest you if you have jammers BUT it has to be proven that they were used to defeat the ends of justice.
The law states that it is not illegal to own one but it is illegal to operate one, hence defeating the ends of justice.

Initially, from 2003 - 2006 or so the devices weren't very popular and the cops didn't have a clue but now they are found on almost all high end cars and the cops look out for them. The Bell and Escort's are difficult to properly hide and are therefore very visible in roadblocks etc. They are also the two most commonly installed and cops know exactly what they look like.

If the cops are merely taking pictures with their laser guns you should be fine as they have very rarely got off their comfy deck chairs to wave at me but when they are positioned to pull you over it is more risky because some of the older units like the Bell and Escort, while jamming, actually display a “jammed” on the Police LIDAR and the pigs get really angry and will probably try stop you and lock you up. I had one instance coming back from Durban through Howick where I was hammering along at 190 and the oke literally ran up to the side of the road and waved his finger at me in the “naughty naughty” notion. Had he been able to read my speed, I would have probably been locked up.

I have now mounted my Laser Star transmitter/receiver directly behind the bumper grille right below the front number plate and the rear one has been mounted inside the car just below the 3rd high level brake light. They cannot be spotted at all but I don’t think the rear one will work properly through the rear window due to the angle of the glass, reflection etc.
I’m going to move it into the rear taillight on the boot lid where there is a no globe on the left hand side. Right side has a rear fog light and the left hand side has a blank. They'll never see it there.

Now with the Laser Star you can set it to jam immediately after detection for 4 or 8 seconds thus allowing you to hit the brakes while jamming in order to get down to the legal speed limit and then after the 4 seconds the cop will actually get a reading. According to the guys I bought it from and some internet reviews, the Laser Star and anti laser devices don’t show up on the cop’s LIDAR devices but rather just display an error so they shouldn't get too grumpy with you. I believe the 4 seconds is enough, but I’ll have to have a few test zaps by the cops and see.
Also, if I get stopped and they do work out I have something installed I'm just going to pull the, "I bought it with the car and think it's PDC" and will demonstrate the PDC function if need be.

My advice, even though there ain’t a law to own one, rather get one like the Laser Star and anti laser which has match box size transmitters/receivers and hide them 99.99999999% as the cops get real funny and will even lock you up for suspected defeating the ends of justice. You do not want to do time in jail…

:clap:Thanks for the info and advise e46M3. Seeing as I'm planning on getting an M next year and have been in enough trouble with the 330, I need these devices but my limited knowledge to such would have probable landed me in jail (as I would have bought the wrong stuff) if you hadn't posted such an informative read on what to get!

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm thinking of getting the AL G9RX apparently it doesn't even show an error on the LIDAR (Check out the you tube clips). I'm just worried about being pulled over at a routine roadblock and getting into crap. I wonder how well the sensor can be hidden on the Z4 grill.

Where are you buying it from? ...and make sure it has front and rear transmitter/receivers.
How much?

Yeah, it has both the front and rear sensors. apparently there's only one approved dealer in cape town, http://www.lasercho.co.za, about R7k for the system and around R1k for installation. What do you think? How much was the Laser Star?

Laser Star was R4200 and they charge R1250 for installation but with a bit of time you can install it on your own.

Laser star is good but just be careful, I do not think it can jam the Truspeed EU yet and there are a few in use in the country already.

The best units internationally proven for the last few years now consistantly has been the Blinder and Laser Interceptor. And the pricing is not ridiculous at all. Will go and look for the test results and post it here, know I have it saved somewhere. Both units have PDC functionality and on the blinder you can update the jamming software yourself (Internet download), so you do not have to buy new jammers when new guns are developed. Oh yes and no Jam codes.

The Idea behind using jammers is to slow down as soon as you are targeted and switch of the jammer so they can get a reading. If you JTG (Jam to gun) they are going to give you sh!t.

They can only get you for obstructing justice if they can prove that the units where operational.

Just something interesting about Laser Guns. The lighter the car the easier it is for them to get a reading. So if your car is black without shiny bits the more difficult it is for them to get a reading.

Oh check out Blinder an LI units They are they official importers in SA. Their site has not been updated yet but the newest Blinder units are the M47 (Cars) and M27 (Bikes)

It sounds like when they catch you using it, you will likely be locked up. If they stop you for another reason and find it, they give you crap about it and will probably threaten you with jail.

I have a Z3 2.8 and I have been pulled over many a times as well. Most of the time these guys were just curious about the car. Just dont get all hardeg@t and irritated, be calm, lie about the detector and continue...peacefully.

also looking at these devices :)
read that the laser start is the best one out there, was also looking at reviews.
Laser intereceptor seems to be terrible according to reviews i seen.

Where can i get a laser start in SA?

ashh with regards to z4s being pulled over.
got pulled over twice on my way from sandton to monte casino.
both times by normal police, first time around they search the car for drugs and firearms, second time they did fuckall but look at my disc and see that it was expired and started giving me shit, untill i tuned him to write me a fine and then they just fucked off to their car (i believe they can do fuck all about the disc? normal police....) lol but yeah the police seems to like to pull z4s over.

hi guys , as far as I now the colour of your car should not make a difference , because they should be getting a reading from your number plate , a cop told me once that with out the plate they can't pick you up ,natal coast

I have posted this on a previous thread as well.

Consider the following scenario, you are driving on the highway along with the other cars, and the cops "scan" the vehicles as they go past and they cannot pick up yours due to a jammer, they will most definitely pull you over and actually look for the device regardless of what car you drive.

A beter option would be to go for a detector rather as it would not interfere with the cops' speedguns, but it will warn you well in advance to slow down.

I had laser jammers that were worth R15 000 on my M3... They were amazing because they warned me when I was being tracked and immediately sent back a signal saying I was doing 80kph.

But... I have since taken them off as I got pulled over so many times and the cops tried arresting me everytime. BIG SHIT. I had to beg and plead and *buy* the cops expensive lunch. I even cut the jammers off right in front of them.

So... It will end up getting you into shit and costing you more money than the fines themselves.
