Console wood polishing

Has anyone had any success with this? Any tips or products I should use? Mine has a few small scratches, looks a little dull but has no cracks.

I am planning to remove the wood panel and then perhaps use a slightly abrasice compund and then polish with a soft cloth. The first prize would be to use an orbital sander.

I am guessing you could wet sand it by starting with a fine sanding paper and moving to finer ones, then you can use a fairly abrasive polish after the sanding, the type of polish you would look for would be the ones used to remove scratches as they are usually pretty abrasive.
