Compare quality and finish

I recently remarked on another thread which was exclusively for F30 owners how BMW's quality has gone out the window in search of weight saving as well as more profit.

By way of visual representation I invite you to compare the following:

20 year old design

7 year old design (or thereabout)

AND to add insult to injury they call it the ultimate driving machine......
eish.

and here is an intermediate design being an e46 M3

Mate, it's not just BMW. Do yourself a favour, go and have a look at the Jetta 4, then the Jetta 5, then look at the sorry car that calls itself the Jetta 6. You don't even have to look at the engine, just sit inside one and look at some of the details, open the boots and have a look.

Peter, for us non tech peeps, can you explain the differences in the pics ?

To be honest, all I see are pics of engines, your expert commentry will be helpful.

Also, do you think that the advancement in technology and EU efficiency laws would have played a part in the newer designs containing so much plastic and other biodegradable material being used in all newer cars ?

Well notice how the wiring is closed up on the "old" motor with a piece of plastic conduit along the length of the motor and with a rubber boot from the conduit to the actually connector. This helps with both closing off the wiring to prevent physical damage and to provide a stress free mounting for the wiring harness.
Note now on the "new" motor how all the wiring is open right up to the connector, also note that it has been mounted with clamps directly on the harness itself

Also note how far the ground connection is from the coils on the "new" motor compared to the old motor.

From the pics it also looks like the plastic cover that goes over the valve cover on the "new" motor is not sealing properly as it is looks to be pretty grimy around the coils. On the other hand the "old" motor looks squeaky clean around the coils.

we have fridge in the family, that was given to my grandmother as a wedding gift 70 odd years ago, a general electric, it has never missed a beat. how long does a modern freezer last?

its simply not profitable to build things to last anymore.. they dont want that brand new bmw on the road 10 years from now..

I have no doubt that the newer models are not put together as well as older ones, I also think that 300 000km is achievable on the newer models but the maintaince costs and down time to get them there will be significantly higher :thumbdo:

If i had not a clue about engines and cars it would have been easy for me to say that the 20 year old motor was a new design .There is no doubt that newer cars are being produced with less attention to detail and with the intention of them not lasting very long .

My dad has a Toyota Camry 220SEI that we bought with about 135k on the clock after nearly 16 years of owning that car she currently has over 580k on the clock and will still keep on going with ease .

I struggle to imagine any new Toyota or any other car brand that could accomplish that build quality in today's times .How many stories have you heard of guys who just got that cars and 1 week later the car needed to go back as there is an issue with the injector or a faulty coil pack ?

I am in no way saying new cars are shit ,yes the build quality is not the best but as with everything in life nothing is as good as it use to be.

I work at a production facility of another vehicle brand.
Don't think it is only BMW, all OEMs are driving this but it is sad to see the German's also going to these lengths.
One thing that was really remarkable for me without going into the mechanics on the new F30 was the interior centre console which really felt cheap...

What is the first engine Peter M50/S50 family?

I owned 2x E90s, a 2009 320i as well as a 2011 320i lci, but to be honest I really prefer my F30.... Yup, it has some minor issues, but I really enjoy this car , compared to the E90s.......I even love the interior.....to me, just feels sooo much more modern....just my personal preference.........and I know squat about engines......all I know is this little turbo charged engine, has some vooooom,, which I love.....it's not the fastest out there,,,,,but it puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.

I wasn't involved but from what I have been told. His constant condescending attitude towards other forum members.

if its about the F30 thread then I hope all were warned/banned there were a few that were very rude in that thread... for example Peter was basically told he was too poor and jealous to comment on the F30 (both very untrue if you know the man)

I dont want to get involved in forum politics but this trend of randomly banning people and letting others slide by is rather worrying and does not help to build a healthy community...
