hi
i noticed that my fuel illumination light was not working i replaced a few small bulbs but it is still off! are there any bulbs on the inside of the cluster? it seem that the steering wheel must also come off to get the cluster out! can there be something else to try before taking the steering off? its a E34 525i

You do not need to take the steering wheel off, its an option, but its murder to realign it then afterwards.

What you can do is, if you loosen the cover on the bottom of the steering wheel, and get your head in underneath, you will see two bolts that hold the steering colum in place. If you loosen those two bolts, your steering wheel will drop down 5cm about, enough to get the cluster out.

It is possible to remove the cluster without removing the wheel or removing these two bolts, but its damm tight, and you risk damaging the dash or breaking off a clip.

The globe you are looking for is at the back of the cluster, and is not in the row right at the bottom.

Good luck.

The E34 cluster must come out.

Once out it opens like a clamshell, but this depends on what year the car is.

Sounds like the cluster needs to come out.

If you are carefull you can pull the steering as far toward the driver as possible using the adjuster. The cluster can them be slid out sideways to the left, this way you don't have to take the steering off.

You don't have to remove the steering wheel. pull the steering wheel as far back as possible, tilt the cluster down and out so that the top part goes through the steering wheel and then turn the wheel and pull cluster out side ways.
