Chipped X5

Hello all.

I have heard that the X5 (E70) 3.0d can be chipped. What exactly does it do for the car? Is it remapping the software or just giving it a performance boost or what?

I am new to this game and have no idea of what they are really talking about.

I am considering getting an E70 3.0d in the very near future, and if it can be chipped without too much hassle, may consider it.

Could someone here maybe elaborate a bit on what exactly the Chip will do?

Thanks

They will remap the car. Primarily the boost map of the turbo (they claim also to do the injection timing). This will give you a considerable power boost. The turbo will die a bit sooner due to it working harder and elevated exhaust gas temperatures.

I suggest get the car, enjoy it for what it is and then decide if you want to remap.

Oh, and make sure to get someone who knows what they do to do the map, like Xcede. Don't use a DIY plug in device, unless you want trouble.

Thanks for that. I was just curious as to what it entailed.

Would chipping it void the warranty or motor plan at all?

give sherwin a call from excede,he is the best and will talk you through the process. That x5 will be amazing chipped. Makes a huge difference. Also fuel consumption will drop

It can void motorplan but it is near impossible for bmw to trace it. They would have to send the software on the car to germany.

worst case BMW will flash your software to std

Sweet - thanks guys. If I get the X5 I may just consider it as it wont be new - more than likely a 2007 (e70) model.

How much does it cost by the way?:dunno:

Great low cost and simple performance mod, just remember it places extra stres on turbo...speak to Sherwin though, he'll give you the run down

Primarily the boost map of the turbo (they claim also to do the injection timing).

funny enough im not so sure about the boost thing.. maybe they play with the curve a bit, but maximum boost is definitely not changed. i know because ive been watching my car with INPA before and after an EXCEDE remap. i think most of the extra power comes from longer injection pulses (more diesel injected per combustion event)

which explains why a diesel smokes like a train when the tuner gets it wrong..

After thinking about it, they could also change the sensor scaling factor, meaning that INPA would return the same value for MAP, but the actual MAP might be higher.

That said, BMW diesels run about 20% lean to reduce smoke, so you could increase fueling by 20% which would give more power, but also a lot more smoke. Increasing it beyond that without increasing the amount of oxygen will have unwanted effects.

quite possible, i would love to know what exactly they do, but i dont think that is the kind of info they will share ..

i know for a fact that the same type of effect as a remap can be achieved by using injectors with bigger nozzles, say for instance 335d injectors, which simply alows more diesel to enter the combustion chamber during the same injection period..
which is why im leaning towards the concept of a remap injecting more diesel per stroke by slightly lenghtening the injection period.

AFAIK, the same effect can be had by upping the rail pressure, but that does make the car smoke like a train... So by just upping fuel, you will up smoke. If you tune the injection timing like spark in a petrol engine, you might get better results...

I've the software done on mine for over a year and no issue to report to date, its been a postive experince. Consumption is down, currently averaging about 9l / 100km, torque is massive, very drivable and smooth, and absolute burst of power when you need it, it not super quick but enough make the trip more enjoyable.

It feels more comfortable at 150 / 160kph than it does at 120 :=):
