Hi gents.

Upon my recent visit to Ralf@speedwaymotorsport, I got under the car and had a look around whilst it was on the lift.

I purposely meant to do this, as I noticed the car is leaking oil from right after my recent oil service. Ralf and I tried to see exactly where the oil is coming from, but there is no clear indication when looking either from the top or underneath.

However, the general area that shows wet with oil indicates that the leak is somewhere behind and above the aircon compressor, above the turbo. It's dripping from a height because it forms droplets in various locations, making it look like a cluster of small leaks.

Andy1GP informs me that it may (hopefully) be due to a slight overfill of oil from when I did the service. My car takes 7.5 litres of oil and so it's possible that I did overfill a bit. So far it's been two weeks and no warning from the car that the oil is shorting, so it doesn't seem like a major leak from anything important.

Can anyone else advise as to what it may possibly be?

I ask that Andy and Ralf post their opinions here, as they have both explained to me what else it might just be, but this mechanical virgin doesn't remember the technical details or terminology... Something about an overflow thing...

Any advice or input is greatly appreciated :ty:

My oil filter is on the other side of the engine, and right on top. No visible signs of leak there.

Also, the o-ring was replaced

First replace the crankcase breather. Then check the turbo pipes and the breather pipe, they are more or less located there. Overfill by 1 liter will not cause this. Also check the turbo air ducting.

this is my observations

1)liquid drops forming on the bottom of the compressor casing of the turbo
2)all dry behind this area, ie no oil evident on the turbo bearing lines, no oil on the turbine casing of the turbo
3)attemtpted to dismantle the air filter box to get access from the top
4)noticed that the large diameter pipe leading forward from the turbo compressor was heavily coated in oil and grime
5)no oil leak evident on the engine block in the area of the turbo

so the oil leak is coming from somewhere forward and above the turbo compressor but underneath the airfilter box

Yes, that is probably the crankcase breather pipe. The turbo supply banjo is also in that region, but that is less likely. Please don't try do dismantle the air filter housing, it is part of the tappit cover and to remove it, you need to remove the injectors and to remove the injectors, you have about a 50% chance of replacing the engine if you don't service and check calibration of the injectors. (somewhat due to the age of the vehicle)

An update:

As some of you may know, I recently removed the swirl flaps on my car which lead to a vacuum pipe that needed blocking off. It was blocked off temporarily, and as Murphy is Murphy, it really was TEMPORARILY as the damn thing decided to unblock itself.

This means that for the last couple of weeks I have been driving around with a vacuum leak, and so the car had absolutely NO power until I hit 2500 rpm, where all the power would eventually say peek-a-boo and the car would shoot forward as my foot would be flat down from trying to get the car to go somewhere before it would find some boost.

So, today we got under the hood once more and removed the intake manifold, got to the vacuum manifold and blocked off the vacuum pipes for the swirl flaps, the engine mounts, and the EGR. We also replaced the vacuum line leading from the vacuum manifold to the turbo. The old one was really brittle, and had a gaping hole in it, probably since I've had the car.

I want to extend my deepest and greatest appreciation for a friend like Flash, with all the help he provided, getting extra parts that were needed, the tools he supplied, the support, and more important the company :ty:

Thanks Flash, Adolf and Wayne for everything today, I cannot say how much I appreciate it all. You guys really and truly are a bunch of life savers, and so I owe you

I also want to thank Rob for getting some really really really rare parts from BMW Pietermaritzburg for me (the necessary plugs for the vacuum manifold), and bringing them up to Joburg for me. These parts are so rare, that BMW doesn't even sell them :mmm:

However, Flash was able to persuade them to sell me the parts, and Rob collected and delivered. So thanks for that gents :ty:

No nuts were lost today :bravo:

And......

My car is now PULLING BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE! :joy::joy::joy:

So, necessary vacuum lines blocked off, turbo vacuum line replaced and camouflaged as a fuel line...

EGR now disabled, finally

I'd say it was a damn good day!

And let me not forget, a special thanks to Andy for all the advice, info and support, as well as Colin and Sir Greekstyle Peter for previous help and guidance, which all lead up to today's work on my car.

True Fanatics, as always. Thanks guys :ty::ty::ty:
