The issue was the high pressure fuel pump :tease:

but u replaced it and it didnt make a different?
was the replacement unit also faulty?

Yup.

Now I have my original back in after a recon... Going like a dream.

good to hear
and I suppose you didn't even bother looking at the low pressure one under the passenger footwell area ?

Not yet, but it's on my list of preventative maintenance. It makes a loud hum every now and again when ignition is on.

Small update:

5er has been fitted with new handbrake cables. BMW wanted R530 for each. I removed mine and sent them in elsewhere to have them made. R380 for both. Bargain if you ask me.

Engine has been washed after all these repairs. Covers back on. All nice and clean. She's ready for a long trip.

If only a long trip would present itself

Update on the Falken ZE912's on the rear...

I fitted these tyres two years ago (Oct 2013) and so far they have done an approximate 52,000km, give or take a couple hundred. They still have not reached their limit, and I guesstimate that I can still get another 5-8,000km or so out of them if I push it.

I am probably going to replace them before year end though, as rainy season is upon us, and I'd also prefer to have newer tyres before the usual December travels which adds around 3500km to the car in those 10 or so days.

All in all, for the price I paid, the time they've lasted, and the distance they've travelled, I would say they are definitely worth the consideration and will definitely be my next tyre choice again.

I have a tiny suspicion that the viscous fan is on its way out.

When the car is hot I'm hearing a soft gurgling sound upon deceleration. Also, if I spin the fan with my fingers there's no interval stopping points like there used to be. Now it just stops wherever. It also feels harder to manually spin than before.

Re that gurgling sound, to make sure it is the fan, is it advisable to unplug the viscous and drive the car until up to operating temp to see if that noise disappears? Will this affect the cooling circulation at all?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

did you do the newspaper test?

not exact science but a good indicator right?

From what i read, you do not want this thing to grenade so i would suggest getting it swapped out just for peace of mind

I say that like the part is cheap :sorry:

Newspaper test? :slow:

If I do have to swap out, I want to go the electrical route. Need costs etc then.

get the engine up to temperature, roll up a few sheets of newspaper and stick it into the fan blades...if the the fan stops easily and almost immediately without resisting and slowing down, the clutched is fooked

something like this:

Does the viscous spin permanently even on cold starts?

Try goldwagen for the clutch. The electrical route is not beneficial based om my reasearch I did on the X5

It does start up on cold starts, yes. But I'm sure it disengages soon after driving off as I don't hear it then. When hot and in traffic I can clearly hear it again.

Disconnect the power to your viscous fan so the flux capacitor can discharge, if that fails you can replace it with a diesel fan but you may have a loud whine and space issues with one. :roflol:

The newspaper test is good to test if the fan is loose. But if the fan has seized the newspaper test wont reveal that.

Do not disconnect the electrical plug!!! That plug is not the the viscous.

That plug is on the other side of the key barrel, and operates the viscous through a diesel powered little engine:hope-my-fake-smile-works-again:
