Changing ODO from miles to kilos?

Hi guys

I am deciding on buying a BMW E36 318i that has been imported from the UK. UK cars ODO n mileage is recorded in miles. The car that I plan on buying has a local cluster fitted and now shows the mileage recorded in kilos. The current owner claims that a local cluster has been fitted and the original miles mileage has been converted to kilos and now shows and records in kilos. Is it possible for such?

Please advise me.

Yeah it is completely possible. But the question you need to ask is if he made it the correct kilometers or did he shave it?

Why do you want to buy an import?

Well according to him, the mileage has not been shaved, it is the tru mileage. But my question is that why would someone go through all the trouble and work and spend money to convert it from miles to kilos? Is it a big job?

Because it is a 318i 2 door with a full M3 kit. On that note, the E36 318i 2 door came originally with the M3 kit, right?

If it has been tampered with, it is possible there will be a yellow dot visible on the new cluster with the ignition of. If you can, get a pic of the cluster with the ignition on.

Sounds a little dodgy though. Can he show a record of what the mileage was in miles before the change and what it is now?

Unfortunately E36 clusters can be swapped without the tamper dot lighting up. The mileage goes with the cluster, usual trick to shaving mileage off an E36. Ask the guy for the original cluster or walk away.

Even taking that into consideration. A tamper dot only appears when the vin of the cluster doesn't match the vin of the rest of the units. The vin of the cluster can be changed in a matter of seconds with some cheap obd2 software. The mileage on the cluster does not trigger a tamper dot.

i actually did this on a e46 330ci that was ex UK. you need an EDIABAS compatible usb OBD cable, and BMW DIS or INPA software.. takes a few minutes and doesnt throw any tamper warnings etc
