Changing brake pads

Hi there guys,
So my E90 needs front brake pads replaced and it's out of motorplan. The guys at JSN normally does this for me but decided to do it myself.
I have changed brake pads on my previous cars so thought it could not be that difficult.
Jack up the car, take out the tyre, then the retainer clip. Next remove that bolt cap.
Now that bolt looks like an Allen key which I thought I had.:argh:

So my question is, I am assuming it is an Allen key, but what size.

Gonna takle this again tomorrow after work, provided I get the right size Allen key.

Not gonna give up:thumbs:

Its a 7 Allan.

A crap size indeed, as most kits do not come with them.

Hey Leonard,
Anything I should be aware of when changing the pads

Thanks for the advice on the size 7 key:thumbs:

Go to Adendorf and buy yourself a set of allen keys and splines as BMW uses a lot of them.
Roughly R300.
They are now located next to Tiger wheel and Tyre in Stryjdom Pak

Thanks dude,
I got the spline set already and a few Allen keys.

While I am taking the wheels out on the front, I wanna take the rears out and fit 9mm spacers.
Now where do I get spacers?

No special tricks.

Except perhaps the carrier pin that the caliper runs on.

Clean those nicely, and use some high temp grease.

Other then that, oh and remember that if the brake sensor is not actually damaged, and you do not have a warning, you do not need to replace them..

Words cannot describe how oissed off I am now

So take out the tyre and retainer clip.
Also the plastic grommets thingy.

Take my 7 Allen key and open, it is tight but slowly moving, then snap.

F@cking allen key breaks inside the bolt head.

Put everything back.
Need to find a solution now

Domingos in Fordsburg. Pricey though, but excellent quality. Sorry to hear about the broken Allen key...

So drove to JSN this morning and the guys stripped the caliper and a few minutes later the broken piece was out.

They cleaned everything, put in new sensors and put the new pads on.

I will recommend those guys any day.

With you on that, if you can afford it (i can't L.O.L), JSN is one of the better dealers around town.

Although you have already changed the brakes, a point or two to remember is
1)open the brake fluid reservoir filler cap
2)you will need to push the brake piston in somewhat to account for the differnece in size due to the "meat" on the new pads vs the old pads, but pushing this piston in will displace fluid up to the reservoir, which will possibly now overflow.
3)sometimes the trick to loosening off these bolts is use a penetrating fluid spray to get into the screw thread, and also consider giving the bolt a sharp crack with a hammer (Jeremey Clarckson wasn't wrong in his choice of tool)..this sometimes breaks the seized screw thread enough to allow it to be loosened.

Ideally one should use the Allen-socket set for this and not the single stand alone allen keys.

Always loose the res cap as per Ralf above ....

But never push back the break caliper with releasing the bleed nipple, no ABS system should ever have fluid reverse through the system. Rather loosen the the nipple, at least 2 complete rotations and then push the piston back slowly. It should be very easy to retract the piston into the caliper, so easy that you can do it with hands.

Yip it might be a little messy, but a little mess is nothing vs a new abs system.
