rather take the back off before you send it in... the fact it locked up like that does not bode well... if the gears look ok inside then it might be worth fixing if not look for another diff...

I will def take the back off before taking it in, the backside is up now and the wheels spin fine. It seems the front locked up at the input flange.

The guy said he can replace gears. Just dont want to dish out another 3500 for a diff, id rather spend 3500 on fixing this ine and know its working.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the diff man... Hope it gets sorted as quickly and as painlessly as possible.
I've seen a couple of posts regarding this mod but I haven't come across why people want to do it... anyone keen to explain?? :)

So took the diff out in an hour, removed the back plate and guess what,? No oil , seems that the back plate wasn't torqued properly and no gasket or sealent, so it leaked all the oil. The diff is at the diff center now and they will let me know in 2 hours if it can be fixed. They order parts from bmw so it seems it will be costly.

BMW only keep the seals for this diff... everything else will have to be got elsewhere

did you find many shavings in the case? if not it may just mean some new bearing are needed :)

You sure about this?

Looking at this pic it doesn't look like a diff that has been leaking:

What was the oil level in the diff before fitment?

I put new oil in before driving as per the diy instructions, photo was before car drove. Think when oil heated it started leaking..

Very strange indeed, as 1km is not really enough to heat up the diff oil, or to seize up a diff entirely, even one with no oil in it.

When oil reaches temp it becomes very viscous, so if the gasket was ruined then it would cause the oil to leak out very quickly once the oil got hot.

If you had just put diff oil in the diff and its empty now then that would be the only logical conclusion I can think of.

So they just called me back. Pin and bearing (or something) is seized, 10500 to repair.. will just have to source another diff

Okay, another update.

So was on my way to fetch the diff now, the guy showed me that 2 bearings collapsed and suggested that he replace the bearings and seals.

Worst case scenario: R3500 :flyfun: Think I jinxed myself earlier when i said I'd rather spend R3500 on repairs.

He did say however, there is a very small chance that the diff will whine.

So lets hold thumbs :fencelook:

Why not just let them swap the Ring & Pinion into your old diff which you know is healthy?

The old diff is a 2.93, this one is 3.38. Wont that change the ratio to a 2.93?

The ring and pinion are the only things determining the ratio.

That is why i said - take out the R&P of the seized diff and put them into your 2.93, thereby making your old diff a 3.38

But the bearings on the ring and pinion is the ones thats collapsed. Can you safely remove the bearings from the old diff and swap them?

Soory dont know much about these

The ring-gear should just bolt off from the whole "pumpkin" where the spider gears, and bearings are located
