Hi

So I own a 2012 F30 BMW 320i auto. My mileage is currently sitting at 101000 KM and I did not extend the m-plan. The car does not have any problems or issues so far (touch wood). The car has been maintained well with oil changes every 10000km or so. Last year there was a whining noise from the engine and it was found out to be the oil pump chain so that was replaced under warranty.

Now here's my dilemma. I heard notorious stories about N20 engines that fail etc. and would cost 100k and up to get the engine fixed/replaced. Extended warranties doesn't cover that much. And, I got told that BMW 320d/330d hardly gives any issues.

Would it be better to trade-in my car for a newer BMW 320d/330d so that I can be at peace or should I just stick with my current car?

Thanks!

OP
Another thing to consider is longer term diesel cars are going out of favour in Europe not sure if that will have an effect in sunny Sa? Diesel have a lot of good for them, but I wouldn't buy a new one now if you are planning to keep long term, resale value could become an issue.
I am a Petrol fan though, so wouldn't own a diesel just to ensure that in 5 years it will probably be more reliable.

EU legislation is pretty aggressive though, in Africa, diesels still are king and won't change for a while i reckon. there is too much red tape and they definitely cant offer the "scrappage" schemes that they do overseas.

also in Europe, they seem to have a strong agenda there for pushing electric car sales, where-as this side of the world, we havent enough electricity to even run what we have got right now.

Apart from SA, diesel is alot cheaper than petrol in most Southern African countries. combine pump price with good fuel mileage and the amount of torque (and general reliability) you get, you really cant go wrong imo.

edit: i own a vw jetta tdi 1.9 and a e46 330ci (similar mileage around 190k each). in the last 6 years, i've spent ALOT more on the beemer... like almost 8x more

I don't know if I would trade if it were me... probably not - unless you get a good trade deal.
Otherwise - prevention is better than cure.
Why not get a third party warranty, I have claimed 70k worth of repairs on my Mini so far (engine rebuild, timing chain replacement, turbo replacement, thermostat housing)

Which aftermarket warranty do you have?

The diesel benefit can only really be realized if your milage travelled per year is really high. If you offset the higher initial cost of the car etc, don’t think there’s much in it then from a savings perspective overall. Longer term maintenance costs also seems higher for diesels as well as resale value later on in its lifecycle

Sorry but there’s nothing cheaper than a paid off car. If you spend the rest of your life trading in and “paying off” the only people getting richer are the banks, not you. Cash is king if you cant afford it cash, you cant afford it.

If finance was cheaper (if you can get a good deal on prime -), or you are planning on buying cash - go for it - Granted that you dont get peanuts for your current car.

Ask yourself, are you really that concerned over a "maybe" or do you just want a new car.

Thanks everyone! My car is paid off.

I was thinking of trading in my car (probably around R180k) for another BMW in the region of R300k.

Tough decision :hammerhead:

personally i would sell the car & buy a M and a cheapie ...assuming you don't already have a sporty car..no car payments.

have you thought of Trading in for a an E90 330d? that way you would only have a small portion to pay in if not anything at all.

I can only assume that what you personally would do, you are relaying as potential advice to follow?

in that case, the oke wants to buy a potentially more reliable car and you suggest buying an "M" and a cheapie?

Considering the cost of a 320i vs any M, I think its safe to assume that he will have to buy a "cheaper" or older M again opening up pandora's box on maintenance and/or reliability issues? Not even considering the "cheapie" and the potential pitt falls of that car (what ever that might be).

This is probably the single worst advice i have yet to read on this forum :thumbdo:

If you can get what you mention for your car, this might not be a bad option. IF you can find one in top nick!

hahaha i don't think you know how expensive a 320i can be out of motorplan...we are enthusiast here so if you think my advice of buying lets say a nice E36 M3 and a cheapie and having no car payments and looking after said //M is the worst advice you've heard then thats fine. I'm sorry i offended you haha

and the cheapie is the realible daily. He will have something that will appreciate in value and will put a smile on his face when he drives it...something special! I'm an oldschool fanatic bud...maybe thats the difference...:=):

no but lets say for example it has DCT box and needs clutches ...or the timing chain goes or the turbo...its super expensive so what I'm saying is id rather take the risk on something worthwhile like an E36 //M3 etc. than a 320i you know what i mean

remember that the OP is thinking of owning this car without a warranty
