Good day
Im Ashley
This is my first post, so i hope i get it right.
I am looking for a CD changer unit for my e46 318i. Mine displays 'error' message and works no more. I may go as far as installing a front loader, just to get music choice back. A used but functional cd changer unit is 1st prize.
Also im needing a new gearnob and bonnet badge. Mine are worn from wear. Any information on available parts is much appreciated
Regards

Hello

There is a place in Pretoria, Bemow Spares, they salvage BMW's

www.bemowspares.co.za

I know they have a front loader available there at present and they should be able to help you with the gear knob and badge.

If they cant, check autostyle.co.za

Welcome Ash777:wave:

The bonnet roundal is between R120-200 second hand. You can also try
Cr auto dealers @(012) 327 4679.

hope this help.:thumbsup::dunno:

Thanks gents.
Same day responses ;-)
I have made an enqiry at both those places.
I will also look into an air mass meter.
now to hijack my own thread....i have been forced to park in the sun for the last few years. Lucky thats come to an end, but the result is a faded to silver bonnet badge as covered, but also my roof supports (front windshield supports) fabric around the long airbag has come loose and wrinkled. How do i fix this? Is there a reccomended upholstry place?
Also the sun has taken a toll on the leather seats, but i assume there are many leather workers that can improve on cracks etc.
Lastly a general question...how long can i expect engine to last before serious work is needed? Its a 318i manual, always taken reasonable care of it, and has already done 205 000kms. At this rate should i be fine to do 300 000kms without reconditioning/repair work? Lets for a moment count out flukes and freak problems. What can i reasonably expect? I really like my car, but am just wandering if there is a general opinion on when or what mileage it becomes too expensive to keep.
Thanks in advance, and thanks Rossouw & Tumo

Thanks EphraimRamodike!
This is an awesome site. Glad there is so many passionate BMW drivers out there.

Hi,

What error do you get on your head unit display when you try to play CDs? Mine gave a "no cd" error when I got my e46. Was relatively easy to fix, but does mean you need to open the CD changer.

Hi Vince
it may say the same error. i cant remember because i removed it from the car for repairs and do not get the error message anymore due to the changer being removed.
How did you fix yours? My old man is pretty handy with electronic fixes. I gave it to him as he promised to take a look. Anyway, months have passed and he has not done it, so im desperate and been considering just sourcing a new/used replacement. Getting tired of asking him ;-)
So im may well be the same error msg. How did you sort yours?

Ash

my problem was pretty simple...the changer's robotic arm couldn't grab the CD tray from the magazine. All I had to do was take some vaseline and lube the mechanism.

But I might just been lucky.

Hi Vince
that may actually be just it. I should get it from my old man and try it. Somewhere else i read a while back that this problem is typical, and a service sorts it out. You regreasing it is really servicing it, which may be the trick. Thanks for the insight. Im going to try that. It sounded like it was serching or trying to find a cd, stops, then displays error (forget what) i think it was 'no cd'. i can hear a servo like buzz for a few seconds, then it says sorry for u.
Kind regards
Ash

the car should run quite a good few km's. Just service is regulary with good oil.

My 95 model is on 432000km's and now i had to do the head gasket because of the traffic during the world cup opening ceremony.

Firstly, a formal wecome from the local law guru, beter known as MR. "Skiet die bliksem!"... dont worry, read the other threads you'll see why.
Concerning the re-upholstry...
What area do you stay? If close to Pretoria I might know someone.
Once again. Welcome.

Thank you Mr Skiet die bliksem for the welcome
I stay in roodepoort. but i would consider travelling for a decent job if the guy is reccomended?
DO you think its easy to find used matching front seats at the same cost? Is repairs generally the way foward with leather?
May i ask you the law guru a random question about the law?

My front number plate fell off in a car wash (really did) and i took my time reattaching it but not before being stopped my the cops. Besides the fine, the officer gave me a tip. He thought i was a speedster as 'he knew my type' and said that if both plates are off, they can arrest me, so i must keep at least one number plate on.
Honestly he misread my 'type' as my missing plate was not a speedsters trick, esp not the front plate? Anyway its back on now and im all legal.
Now my question...was he correct? and what about bikers? so many ride with no plate? and if there is one its often undersized and under the bike. What fine or arrest do bikers face when caught without any number plate? If they could be arrested or face court, why are so many brave enough to do it? Are they generally left alone by the cops?
I just dont understand that if the penalty is so high, why do so many bikers do it? If i was a chancer i can understand removing my rear car number plate and face a fine if caught.....but removing the one and only plate off a bike, and being arrested if caught hardly seems worth it?
Is there an angle or info i am missing?

Ash

Just an update on the cd changer
I have now got 3x people claiming to have a used unit for me. Im going to buy the cheapest one. Im going to want to plug it in and test it. if it works, ill part with my cash.
Any opinion on how much money is too much would be great?
One guy says R1000, the rest i am still to chat to.
