CC ID 231 error code after installing upgraded sound

Hi everyone, so haven't had an electrical problem with the car except once 2 years ago when the car went in to limp mode after the TPS though a warning light. It fixed itself the next day and haven't had a days trouble, until today.

For reference the car is a 2008 E90 320i.

So I installed an amp and subs. I connected the new amp using an RCA converter by splicing in to the original BMW amp through an online video. I also connected using the thin black wire for the remote wire. Other than the 4 speaker wires and the 1 thin black wire in the same loom that I spliced in to, the only other cables I touched were the battery positive and negative (used as a ground).

Sound install went well and I have fantastic music playing, except when I turn on the car the the lights come on automatically and cannot be turned off. The indicators, fogs, brights, reverse, park lights, and power windows do not work. The car is also registering the the right passenger door is open, when it is not. That's all I have noticed so far.

From the searching I have done, it all appears like the FRM is stuffed. I just don't see how disconnecting the negative terminal could cause that. I've never touched the battery terminals or tried jumping the car either. Is there anything else I could check? Specific fuses, or how would I try to reset the problem? Did i use the wrong wiring (Don't see how that's possible since the only wires that were touched were speaker feed wires). Anything else I can try and look at.

I have seen a few people on here are able to reset/ refurbish the OEM one? Is there anybody on there who can point me in the right direction and possible a rough quote. R16k++++ for a replacement from BMW is a definite non-possibility.

I am in East London, hoping I can find someone to help even if I have to courier as I definitely cannot drive the car around and leave it anywhere since the windows don't go up.

Have you done an ODB scan? Might be as simple as clearing the codes and off you go.

Ps. Don’t ground the amp or any component directly to the battery. Use the chassis or body instead. Try disconnect the amps ground and see if it solves the problem.

Also @Richard_H on the forum might also be able to assist

Thanks for the replies I will get in contact with the 2. I will remove the ground and see if that changes anything although when I removed the positive which essentially removed all power from the amp, I still had the problem.

I have tried to connect my OBD2 scanner (which is a very basic ELMI bluetooth thing but my phone refused to connect to the scanner. Usually the scanner has a green light running which it does not this time round.

I would prefer to have someone clear the codes for me at any rate since I am not very good with coding. I have done several maintenance items as well according to the service manual (geez why do spark plugs, changing oil and replacing an air filter have to be so... extra).

So I took it to a local shop who scanned and there's a communication error between the FRM and everything basically. Not as simple as just resetting the codes either. There were many many codes relating to the intrument cluster and headlights etc, more so than just the frm failing to communicate.

He said it's likely I need to replace.

Went to the dealer and they told me 8k for replacement and programming which does't sound as bad as the 16k-32k I have seen on the forum.

A second hand one will set me back 2500 + programming cost and no warranty.

Don't know if this can still be repaired?

Should I just bite the bullet? I have not yet been in contact with Gert - been out of EL since Monday and returned last night only.
