car problems. what you guys think

hey guys i got a bmw 323ci e46 when i accelerate in 3rd gear it makes a knocking noise underneath by the drive shaft or gearbox but it only happens in 3rd gear rest of gears are fine what you guys think the problem is

You will have to raise the car to see if you can identify any obvious mecanical problems underneath...:thumbs:

Could be that the sound is more pronounced when you drive slowly. When you go fast the knock may still be there but you may not hear it.

try see if it happens at a specific speed... then it could be an imbalanced prop shaft...


1st things to check out are the guibo and the center bearing... unfortunately you need to remove the exhaust to see the bearing :(

Sounds like one of your drive shafts are stuffed.... had the same problem with my 330 e46.... You will need to take it to your Mech to confirm

this could be plenty things... would be best to take to someone who does CV joints they should find he problem for you :)

I had this ages ago in my old E30, given it was auto but the drive coupling was stuffed. No idea if that will help you in any way but a good thing to check.
