Can you tell the size of the engine from the looks of it?

get the engine number on the block and run it past a dealership.

IMHO if engine number code is 206S... then 2 litre 6 cyl and if 256S.... then 2.5 litre 6 cyl . Dealer will give full details .

The joke of all is that i did speak to BMW in PE and the guy said he can only work from the VIN and tell me that. I also thought that they must have an engine database. My engine number is 26659023

defnitely not 325I look at the intake manifold! 2 engines came out with that manifold! 320i and 328i and you will not complain if it was a 328i! Look on the registration papers that should state if there was an engine swop!

Looks to me like the 320i 2.2 6 cyl!

The one thing I can tell from looking at that engine is that it is definitely not a M52, that is a M54 and looks exactly like my 2003 320i engine.

Streetracer, i pick this up because the engine number on the MP info is diff. from the RWC. And like Hellas, sure it is clean and is also running beautifull. My big puzzle is why did someone add a 323i badge on the back. I was hopping that there were a database for engines somewhere. I am busy with the previous owner i.c.w. the diff. in value between a 320 and 323. He owe me some bucks!

Ok , problem solved. If you remove the left front wheel and you look to the left of where the dipstick enter the lower part of the engine you will see the engine number and code. Like Raybimmer explain earlier, this code next to the engine number is 25 6s.4. At least i am having a 2.5 motor. What is the 4 at the end of this code.

Tell me more Streetracer, and how much does it cost. This is my better half wheels. I stick to my 330d

the 320 and the 328 has a very restrictive intake manifold to reduce power! the 325 manifold however is much broader and matches the inlet ports! there is an easy 10kw on the wheels hidden there! just start a thread in the forsale section asking for a M50 325i intake manifold takes about 3 hours to fit! very easy and effective mod!

If the code is for example : 256S4 01 A then it should be :
25 - Displacement
6 - number of Cylinders
S - 4 Valve technology ( D - Diesel , E - Fuel Injection , K - Catalytic Converter (M10,M20M30 only) , T - Turbo , V - Carburettor )
4 - Differentiation Index ( Something to do with flux capacitor ! )
01 - variant Number ( 01 , 02 , 03 , 04 etc )
A - Remanufactured ( N - New )
So IMHO this is a M52B25 motor .
Wynandd , Correct but what if engine has been replaced ?
Pity we can't enter engine number alone and get details .
Hope this helps a bit .

Thanks Raybimmer, i think you are correct. The info from the vin does not help in this case as the engine was replaced.
The actual car is a 320 but at least i have a 2.5 powerplant. I must admit that i was P off when i found out that it is a 320. The performance are very good as i compare it to my 330d i drive every day.
