was busy with an oil change and noticed some problems on the valve cover gasket. waiting on parts. how long can i leave the motor without oil?

or should i just fill the new oil in?

It should be able to stand for a while without oil, just not months.

Its not like every single part in the engine is suddenly cleaned of all its oil. And as I see it, when the car is standing, the oil is in the sump anyway.

Gurus may correct me.

there will still be a fine oil layer covering over all the surfaces, enough to prevent any rust from forming, just don't leave the "open" engine exposed to the elements, ie in open dusty air or moisture.

at motor workshops where engines are stripped down for repairs, they also stand for extended periods of time without any oil in the sump, awaiting some or other spares (gaskets etc).

your biggest issue is allowing foreign object damage to enter the open wound on your engine (tappet cover) and most likely in the form of dust and moisture.....a day or two without oil in the sump isn't going to make any difference....just don't start the engine!!

Well seeing as all the oil drains down into the sump when the car is standing the top parts of the engine don't really know whether there is oil in or not...

I put in 6lts last night. Will get spares hopefully this week and close it up. The top plastic cover is off but the gasket is still on. I replaced that recently. I am really pissed off at the mechanic that worked on my car last.

broken sensor normally does that on an e46 so you got that one right  just live with it for a bit...

Normal oil light behavior:

Comes on red - Low oil pressure, shut off engine NOW!
Comes on yellow after shutting off car - A little low on oil. Add oil soon
Comes on yellow while driving - Significantly low on oil. Add ASAP!
Comes on yellow a few seconds after starting and then goes off after several seconds - Defective sensor. Check oil level manually until replaced.

shamelessly copied form another forum
