Can I afford a high-mileage Z4?

The salesman just called, he said he's got a new battery in the car and the problem hasn't come back. He also said that because they are a big dealership they have no issues with refunding me within the first 30 days if I should feel that I made a mistake. They also include a R20,000 mechanical warranty for 12 months from delivery, not much if something catastrophic happens, but it would help.

He's not at all helping my decision.

I can still smell the leather on my palms...

I'd save a bit more and wait for a 3.0Si, alternatively, maybe consider a Z3 3.0i (I think the Z3 3.0i has the same motor as the Z4 3.0i? Fundis confirm).

Also, if you get a 3.0Si you'll get the later model, facelifted lights etc. My 2.5c. It does seem like you want this *now* but you're much better spent waiting and finding a car that is perfect, rather than one that is right for now...

Ok fair enough - thought it was write-off only.

Like I said... tricky one this.

Realistically - if you have been looking for quite a while (several weeks) and this is the best considering your wishes and budget... then maybe it's ok and the right one.

But if you could maybe (if you honest with yourself) do a little more due diligence - then you never know - maybe something better will come along.

Either way - you are the guy that will make the call and enjoy the outcome!

:smilebounce:

I have been looking for a while, it feels like a few weeks does that count?

If it felt under powered now, on your 'honeymoon' drive, spare a thought for a few months down the line after you've gotten used to the power. Based on your feedback, if it were my money, I would wait.

That said, your money and your choice.. If it works for you, grab it.

I have to add though that I just took it around the back roads and could barely get it up to 60, while rushing through the shifts to check the gearbox... so like I said maybe just me. I drive a 1.6 now and it makes 125 hp, so I'm sure 190hp won't feel THAT much better?

I'm gonna sleep on it... I'm going to go look at it again tomorrow morning and take a comp tester and my fluke with to check compression and voltages. And a big flashlight to check for leaks, and decide then. The wife will be with me and she has a way to keep me restrained better than I can do myself so..

Will let you guys know what happens.

As always thanks for all the awesome advice! You guys are legends!

Money is the limiting factor, if I could spend upwards of R170k I would have had a 2007/8 3.0Si already brother... My trade in needs about 30k loaded to settle so my debt on that would be over R200k... I'd have very little left for maintenance on the 5 bikes and 2 cars lol.

Good idea to sleep on it and do some final checks tomorrow. Possibly a good idea to take the wife along too...

Best of luck!

Uhm, maybe do yourself a favour and have a voltage meter and check that the alternator/regulator are working ok.

Yeah, wish I had those with me when the car was here... it's an hours drive away now... what does an alternator cost?

Damn these pretty cars and my stupid emotions.. common sense telling me I'm k@k dumb for even considering buying it, but my heart is telling me "doooo iiiitttt son"

Oh it also showed up on MFC loss control in 2010, meaning accident/total loss/repossessed according to Cois.

It's the right price tho...

This means dont buy it.

+1. My first ever bmw purchase was purely out of excitement. 4 months in and R50k later, the lemon def wasn't worth it. Don't rush - the right car will come about

Have you tried calling the previous owner?

Otherwise - I tend to agree - with the mentioned issues (admittedly not having seen or driven it) I would pass and keep looking...

Saw a few other options on Autotrader... I assume you have considered all these?

With all the issues you've mentioned on the first test drive and Cois's history check I would strongly advise you to rather be patient and wait for the right one to come along.

Hi Mate

I have a 3.0l manual , its been awesome , petrol comsuption is decent . Ive had to replace the water-pump and my driver side rear Tyre in the 2years that I have owned her.
Such an awesome care , spent some money on a few cosmetic mods and even that wasnt to pricey . Def agree with the guys that say avoid the 2.5 and get the 3.0.

Good luck

Howsit gents!
Sooooooo
I pulled the trigger after fine combing the car.

I REALLY tried finding fault, I checked voltages, I checked coolant bottle, I checked the DISA valve, I checked for leaks, I checked for squeaks, I checked for everything I've ever read about going wrong on these cars and simply could not find fault.
I told my wife to take notes the night before and read them back to me on what all to look at (so I don't get excited and forget) and the car passed it all.

The ONLY thing that was not 100% is the sump being slightly sweaty, but it starts right at the seam so it's not higher up (valve-cover or filter housing).

The DISA valve looked brand new, so did the expansion tank, the airfilter is literally brand new and the oil on the dipstick was caramel coloured so not very old.

The car drives incredibly once you get it on any kind of open road (I work in Parktown, so my test drive consisted of avoiding speed bumps and circles while trying to get through the gears - not a good test)

I took it around the town where I picked it up and even got to put it on the highway and it fecks off. I really don't need more power... this will be my daily for the next 2-3 years.

I'm sure I'll run into niggling issues like all older cars, but luckily have the wealth of knowledge on here to help me out. I took it home with the top down (almost 100km) and even if the car explodes tomorrow, that one trip made it totally worth it.

I had a low tire pressure light this morning, the left rear was at 1.5 bar (runflats) but that went away when I pumped it up, so guessing it's got a slow leak...

Otherwise the car really appears immaculately maintained and for a 12 year old she is very clean, not just on the surface, even under the engine tray, behind the wheels/suspension, the brakes look fairly new, rear pads are brand new and fronts look to be around 60% or so. The drive feels tight and firm and planted.

She sounds amazing, she drives amazing, I'm not regretting it at all (hopefully not ever)

The car will doing around 1000km a month, so theoretically I will put on around 45k - 50k km on her, which will bring her to around 200k. And I maintain my vehicles better than most. So hopefully we'll get there.

It's official. I'm a BMW driver.
