Would the e39 540i drivers care to share their fuel consumption with me please. My car is really heavy on juice, but I just want to get a feeler from other owners first.

Also maybe just give me an indication of your driving habits. Like whether it is mixed driving, freeway, town etc.

Thanks guys

Jandre judging from your fuelly in your signature, its not much higher than my Fiance's 130i Corsa hatch...

:)

Makes me re-think the idea of buying a small car to save fuel

thats how we roll....

But looking over the Jeeps Log book, its only had fuel 4 times this whole year as it hardly gets used..

The Disco is down in Port Alfred, so just gets used in the small town etc up steep hills etc..

I average around 12.5l -13l/100 Mixed. Driving style average (not agressive not pootling) Aircon on all the time. (Aircon off and driving economocally I got 11.9l/100 a few times, mixed driving.)

Ok, mine is not a 540, but I am currently getting 16.8 l/100km out of the M5 in purely town traffic. It did drop to 14.1 l/100km on the recent Hermanus breakfast run, but has steadily crept up again.

How?? I can't get mine below 20l/100km when driving in town no matter how nice I drive. On the open road though I get 10L/100km.

Maybe we should post average speeds. Might give some more insight? :dunno:

Nic, wish I had the answer for you. Maybe it's a combination of age and technology between the e34 and e39. According to my computer, my average speed is only 31, so guess my trip to and from work is rather sedate. My consumption also comes down slightly when I give the old bat a bit of horns.

hi guys , contemplating aa 2002 540i individual auto white with 140km fsh roof and pdc, is it worth investing in a v8 now that smaller engines push out the same power and are more agile on the road? any advice?

Good day Jandre,

The highest I saw on mine was 14.1 :fencelook:the lowest 9.3 (cruise control at 130 to Ceres)

According to the OBC 12.6 since taking her over from Rick.

She is actually lighter that the E34 M50 525 I replaced her with.:inlove:

Just checked my speed now and it's on 24km. I live only about 2.5km from work and I leave it to idle in the morning before I leave. That's probably why mine is so much more.

It depends on what you want from the car. If you want an effortless, comfortable, build like a tank exciting brute... then go for the 540. If you want something that's just fast and fun, then get the more nimble Turbo car. The 5 series is quite heavy, but what it looses in corner speed it makes up in high speed stability.

Go test drive one and see what you think :thumb:

Thanks all. so it seems I will be swapping oxygen sensors soon.

Mine is sitting on 14.3l/100km and slowly but surely creeping up. This is however just town driving. Up and down Durbanroad every morning and every afternoon.

But yeah, she is a bit too heavy on juice.

@Jandre - Mmmm, also had to replace oxygen sensors, should make a difference.

@Nic - I am not sure if this is normal, but my motor is rough on start-up in the morning, so I also let it idle for about 2 mins, and one can hear it settle after that time. Not sure if that effects my consumption figure to any great degree.
