Hi Guys

A few weeks ago my brother in law had a car accident and the car got written off. Hyundai i30. Now he is in search of a replacement. The car will mostly be used by my sister in law.

So he queried about a 2013 116i auto 5 door with 144000km for R122k.
From the one picture I saw it looks good but I know absolutely nothing about these cars to advise him. I am hoping you guys could shed some light on common things to look out for especially on that motor.

Also if anyone has any leads on some good deals. Basically the car needs to be auto. His search is wide. He is looking at all good brands. Price should be around the R100k mark. He can go to R250k but then its balloon finance which I told him to stay away from.

Many Thanks

Search through the forum to see that it's not the best idea.. That engine isn't the most robust and with almost 150k in mileage, not worth purchasing unless maintenance is a non-issue.

Happy that you are not considering balloons.

Seeing that an i30 was the previous car, it is obvious that a smaller car is out of the question and the focus is on a medium size car.

So, at that price range, I would recommend 2 cars:

Honda Ballade 1.5 Auto
Chevrolet Aveo 1.6 LT Auto

The Honda is well put together, even though it is made in Thailand or India, and parts are not an issue. Some trim here and there seem cheap, but the car is a solid buy.

The Aveo is a brilliant family car at that price. One of my extended family followed my advice and bought this car. It is basically an older Opel underneath and it is gutsy and spacious and safe. The doors close with a solid thunk. Some may say that Chev has left SA, so buying this car is dumb. I say no. The Aveo was big in rental and government fleets, so there are alot of them around. Also, Isuzu (taken over Chev service) and Opel SA have strong backup for parts on this car.

My money would go for the Aveo in a grey metallic colour, 30% window tint, aftermarket leather and 17 inch wheels and 205 rubber.

Honestly, that was my car choice once upon a time..

Edit- my family member has had the Aveo bought used in 2015 and it is still going strong.

Good Afternoon

So far the only issue I’ve had was the turbo coolant pipe and that’s about it, nothing hectic.. just had a full oil service, had the rubbers fixed on the doors and everything is good, mileage is on 100681km plus it’s an auto.. no trouble on my side.

Don't.

I've only heard bad things about them. I recall the phrase "Catastrophic engine failure"

if the Aveo has a Z16XEP engine then i wouldnt recommend it! These chain driven Opel engines are kak!

Get anything other than a 116i/118i.

Coolant system issues and turbo issues are far too common on those cars.

Chev aveo is absolute garbage, may as well buy an early 90s Opel corsa as it's the same car. My friend has one, bought brand new, hasn't even hit 100 000km and the engine had to be rebuilt. The car is chock full of electrical failures too. Not to mention that opel/chev/gm pulling out the country so parts are no longer available. He is having a nightmare getting replacement parts for it from the dealer...

Is it the 1.5 or the 1.6 motor?
