Busting Myths

I came across a thread on the VW forum which after through 16 pages learnt quite a bit, especially for a non-mechanic like myself.
http://www.vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=95960

I give full credit to the person who created the thread on there, Panic-Mechanic and was wondering if our local gurus are not able to do the same.

One starts off my stating the old wives tale/myth/theory/ about our cars and either state the proof proving or disproving it. Any other mechanically minded person can respond and either add to the proof or explain why it is a myth....

1) All diesels are the same
2) All diesel engine need 2 stroke oil to help them run better.

In terms of Diesel fuel as much as they are in essence the same, but each manufacturer adds some or other additives, it seems to me that different cars react differently to the fuel being used, i.e, not everybody gets good consumption or power increase on a specific brand.

Older generations of diesel engines with then crappy diesel saw benefits in this process but modern engines and the availability of low sulphur diesel renders this step useless, if not damaging to the motor.

Feel free to add your own myths and hopefully others can explain/prove/disprove.

This was discussed somewhere on the forum before. Apparently this thing of adding oil to the fuel was proven useless.

I'll try find the link.

problem with threads like that (the one on the VW forum) is it will be full of surface info and half truths I would suggest anything gained from that thread be researched further with reference to your application if you really want to know whats going on...

This is an age old discussion/debate that surfaces every few months on the 4x4 forums as well. viz. 4x4community forum.

Two different sides to the argument with very little hard facts and many anecdotal experiences that fuel both sides of the argument..

Really just ends up in a circular debate.. :floggin:
