Broken Hub Tab on e46 M3

Was the car still performing when it came in (apart from the "rattle") ?
what would be the long term ramifications for the uneducated if they decided to "live" with the "rattle", not knowing what had actually happened behind closed-doors/under the cover/within the vanos unit

Starting at a benign break and going as far as engine being seized.

We are missing a large piece of metal which can lodge itself in the oil pump gear which could lead to a sump being broken oil pump chain being broken and on it goes.

Happily the engine is ok and we will hunt for the broken piece of metal.

Well, the metal tabs can get caught in the oil pump... thus causing the pump to break and well we all know what happens when oil isn't pumped through an engine. You run bearings, score the crank etc.

If it does make it past the oil pump and into the sump, it could score the crank which is spinning anywhere between 1000-8000rpm.

Exhaust CAM will not advance and could be out of alignment.

This guy got lucky.

After countless to and fro, countless calls to various BMW suppliers etc etc, i found a complete VANOS unit on Ebay. Spoke to the kind Sir Peter sent him the link to inspect if it has all the parts needed. R10600 including shipping.

eBay is a wonderful thing.

Added Peters address as the shipping one so im hoping it goes straight to him.

But it was indeed a good find. Nearest other unit was 15K.

Atleast after all of this i can be reasonably assured my baby is in tip top shape.
