There's just something about a black car that one cannot ignore, especially when it's clean and well taken care of. Gavin got in touch with me to give his new Audi 8V S3 the once over and restore it to beyond showroom condition :coolShake:

The Premise:

We had two days to bring this beast back to a proper finish. For a car that has 1,500km on it, Audi Rivonia really did a not so great job of maintaining the paint :thumbdo:

The car had swirling all over, and holograms along the sides - the car looked fantastic, until it was parked in the sun :bin:

The Products, Equipment and Process

- The car was washed and cleaned up using Auto Finesse Verso, Auto Finesse Lather, a multitude of brushes and cloths
- Once cleaned up and dried, we clayed the car using a Crazy Detailer clay mitt, with Optimum No Rinse, diluted to clay-lube strength
- The car was then washed again, with special attention given to the wheels

The car was then parked in the garage for inspection:

lovely fine scratching, causing the hologram effect

A close-up shot of the swirling / scratching

We then proceeded to do a test spot:

Scholl S17 on Spider White 5" pads on the left, untouched paint on the right

The combo of white pads with S17 worked extremely well, trouble spots were worked over with Scholl S3, also on white spider pads

The car was polished using a Flex VRG 3401 and BigFoot LHR15 in tandem, with the finishes being identical with the pad an polish combo we chose:

The BigFoot in action

After some work, the surface cleared up quite well:

Directly after being polished

Another in process shot

A difference in clarity, left side untouched, right side polished out

With polishing out the way, we went ahead and used Auto Finesse Tough Prep on Lake Country Constant pressure white pads, again, using the BigFoot and Flex at a medium/low speed

Once that was done, we went ahead and applied Auto Finesse Power Seal using Lake Country Black finishing pads:

The finish after just applying the sealant

We also gave the engine bay a once over using Auto Finesse Dressle:

And the interior a once over using Auto Finesse Total and Auto Finesse Spritz:

It was turning out quite nicely :coolShake:

The next day we woke early and paid some attention to the wheels, dressed the tyres, cleaned the windows and finished up with a coat of the absolutely sumptuous Auto Finesse Illusion (which has been voted the Detailing World Wax of the Year for 2014)

The gloss and shine was almost supernatural! :inlove:

Thank Yous

- Thanks Gav for the opportunity and help
- Thanks to Azhar and Shezaad for the on-going help
- Thanks to Celest for the provision on snacks, Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke
- Thanks to you for taking a look

Very very nice gents. I've got some AF illusion here to try out.

Fuzz, how would you compare the Black Fire diamond against the AF Illusions wax? I know the one is a sealer and the other a wax, but in terms of the 'wet' look?

Hey bro, my suggestion is apply the Black Fire Wet Diamond, let it cure then top it with Illusion.

This is what we got when we used that exact combo:

Individually they work great, but as a combo they're fantastic! That being said, the lasting power on the Illusion isn't that great, so you would need frequent top ups

Round one, the 1M wore some illusion, round two saw the 1M wearing passion

Fuzz,

Words can't express how amazed for one and happy i am with the results.

I can't describe how badly swirled and hologramed the car really was - A few of the buddies know that i wasn't impressed the day I collected from Audi Centre Rivonia -The worst sales experience at a dealership ever - (But thats another story)

As the car was unveiled I saw a lady with a dry cloth wiping the dust off which erked me and immediately on the day after delivery I contacted Fuzz, and now after roughly 2000km (to correct Fuzz:blowheart:) fuzz got an opening in the diary and told me its time.

The car is now better then day I fetched or even viewed and finally felt like something special. Being a non metallic flat black, its amazing how visible the swirling was especially so when clean. The Audi paint was bad compared to the metallic version of paint on my other black car which in my opinion looked a lot better and less noticeable for a car with over 100k km.
All of the above has changed and all I can say is wow - The color is really brilliant now and just as sleek as I can imagine.

Fuzz thank you for the lessons and allowing me to assist on this 2 day journey and I feel even more fulfilled that you allowed me to compromise your attention to detail but letting me get my hands on my own car:tiptoe:...Thank you for being so accommodating as well, felt like home being there for 2 days with the included ease of transportation too and from.

To the brothers and Celeste - Thank you guys for the hard work as well it was really appreciated and I know you guys handled the biggest portion....

It's a pleasure Gav :praise: :ty:

It's also about sharing, and imparting the most amount of knowledge with those that are willing to learn, so thank you for taking an active enough interest in what goes into making a car look awesome :blowheart:
