Got my new turbo today! Cost was R9 108.60 form TurboDirect plus R290 for courier. Got excellent service from them, very helpful and got things moving on Friday morning. Organized Time Freight at about 12h30 and by 15h00 the turbo was already in their hands and on its way to Cape Town.
Hope to have it fitted maybe over the weekend or next week by qualified BMW meccie. Will be away for about twenty days and when i get back hope to have a sweet sounding E39 530d. Will take some pics of the new turbo and post up. (old turbo still running but sounding slightly louder than i am used to)

I have a relative that worked for BMW as a mechanic. A colleage of his did the work for me for R1 050 (what an independant garage here in my hometown quoted me) . Because the turbo did not break and thus no damage to engine/exhaust/intercooler, the labour to replace the turbo was not too much. I think that had i got a quote from BMW it would have not been much more than R2 000, as they quote per hour and the labour quoted by independants was 3 - 4 hours.
What is the mileage on your car? Mine was 226k km, and no wear that i could see on the bearing. I am still convinced that had the turbo not started whisteling due to small piece that broke off the exhaust vane, it could have gone another 200k km! Apart from the slight whine/whisteling sound, it did not feel out of balance or made any other noises. Am not sure how long the whisteling sound was present/when the vane broke, but it could have been thousands of km's for all i know. Definately did not feel a difference in performance. Car pulled like a train before and after new turbo.

Thanks Netercol,

Question though, is this turbo of the 150kw e46 330d? I see that the output flange is a bolt on type, mine is a pipe that slips over and clamps tight, are any of the parts from the 150kw interchangeable with the 135kw? Like the compressor wheel?

Thanks in advance...

the one in the thread is 150kw version, as fitted to a 2004 e46 330d which is a GT2260V .. the turbo fitted to the 135kw version 330d is a GT2256V and is little bit smaller..

compressor wheel is definitely not interchangeable between the two, so compressor housings wont be either, not sure about turbine side, but almost sure the differ in size too..

what car does your turbo need to be fitted to?

An I see, I got the 135kw 330d man...

ouch..

pains me to say it , but i doubt the turbo you got from solo is going to work for you..
on the upside, spares for the gt2256v seems to bee more freely available..

lol, yes of course, my bad.. dunno why i thought it was a gt2260..

anyways, their stripping should be the same, just impeller sizes that differs a bit..

Leigh Baptista from TurboDirect informed me that the kits for the GT turbos will be arriving within fourteen days (her email is dated 11/09/2012) so should be here forthwith. Hope you can fix it up nicely with new bearing and shaft/vanes. She did not give any prices for the kits unfortunately.
