Braking shudder?

hi guys

please advise. if i brake from any speed over 110 (not dead brakes, but hard consistent braking) the front starts to shudder from the wheels and that vibration moves up into the steering column and the longer i brake or hold it in the worse the vibration gets, almost to a point where the steering itself it shaking/vibrating badly and hitting the steering column plastic. If i brake under 100 then its fine, no shudder.

ive done the alignment/balancing a few times, car has recently new disc and pads and control arm bushes. what else can this be??

Thanks

Okay my guess would be warped discs or worn out control arms, but since you've replaced those items i dont know

Plenty things can cause that but 1st place to look would be brake discs (which you can rule out) and rims.

With regards to rims, you have to take the tyres off and place the rim on a balancing machine to see if its warped. Many times I use to check balancing with the tyres on & "ALWAYS" the guy who checked says the rims are not buckled..... yeah right !!!

they were Bosch discs and pads. i recently also had my rims refurbished and straightened in November and balancing was 100% after that, so i have to rule that out as well :(

LoL then your car passed level 1 check :)

Hmmmm from here I can only advise you to check tie rod ends & probably steering rack.

Chris, what happened to me is i bought a set of brand new discs and pads.
About 4 months down the line, I hit a puddle of water on the way home, and all was still ok, only the next day I realised there was a small shudder on the steering wheel.
Only thing that makes sence is that one of the disks had warped when the water hit the hot discs, so maybe something similar happened to your car.
I also agree about the buckled rims, that might also be a cause, even if the alaignment and balancing was 100%, you will have to put the rim on the machine without the tyre to be sure the rim isn't buckled.

Good luck anyway.

Fully agree with Coisman!
Disks are f**ked; bad quality
To solve problem with little $$ have them skimmed; however if you wanna do it right then replace them again with OEM quality parts, nothing else!

Remember... its YOUR life and you don't fool arround with brakes!

I had the same problem just after replacing brake disc and pads,
After spending lots of money and going from one garage to another ,I was told just to do the on car disc scheming which cost me R275 both front wheels - now I can brake even at a speed of 200km/h without any shudder.

Hope this help.

... if its ONLY when braking the on car scheming will not help :nonono:

It sounds like the brake disks to me. I've got the same issue with Genuine BMW disks. Had to do an emergency stop from around 120 one day and after that I had the shudder when breaking, but only from around 90km/h. If you leave it, it will just get worse. You need to get them skimmed or replaced.

Christ29... just have the disks and pads skimmed (static problem) and if you wanna spend extra money also discs on car schemed (dynamic problem)....

That'll solve your problem!

i would also say either disks or LCA or CAB's. sometimes the arms get bent so new bushes wont help, new arms will be required. also the bush could easily give way if you have been hitting potholes shortly after installing them.

also ensure your discs were installed properly i.e. the hubs were cleared off debris with a steel brush and torqued to 100Nm.

i am tending to think it may be a combination.
