Brake vacuum pump

Hi,

My car's brake vacuum pump is faulty, I need a replacement. My mechanic advised me that a BMW OEM is R6000. Anybody know where I can find a (much) cheaper alternative? It's for a 2004 E46 318i Motorsport. I live in Durban.

Thanks.

I repaired mine for R150 , Its was probably the easiest repair I have ever done (on the engine) in a long time. Though it can be tough working at the back of the head , not much space in there. Better to work on the car when its cooled down , even when warm , you can still get burnt.

You can purchase the repair part from BMW parts , its a repair kit for the pump , back in the day they didn't offer this part now they do . Part Number 11668626471.

Comes with two rubber rings , A large one and a smaller one .

Its really easy to repair , you remove it from the block ,

Disconnect the vacume pipe, Thereafter there are 3 bolts attaching it to the head , one at each side , Once removed. Make sure you take a note of how it reattaches back , Make a note or take a picture of the position of that metal slide when you take it out, The piece that hooks onto the head as there is a slide or something of that sort that hooks onto the "camshaft?" I think its called , and spins with it. Because it can be tough getting it back in , Only when it fits in perfectly will it slide in and seal flush.

Once removed from the head , remove the 8 bolts of the back of the pump , once removed , clean it up , if the plastic "rod?" is fine and the pipe that the vacume pipe attaches to is not loose or able to turn then you can go ahead and refurbish your pump. Clean it up , replace the seals , The larger one inside the pump and the smaller one at the front. (The smaller one is the rubber O ring that seals the pump to the engine.

Reattach everything make sure all your seals are tight and it should be fixed.

If the pipe that attaches to the vacume pipe is loose , or is able to turn , What I did as a temporary repair (though to be honest , it could also be a permanent repair as after I did this I had no problems or issues thereafter)
buy prattly steel? I think its called , and seal it up around the edges, This would stop it from spinning and seal it up so there wont be any oil or vacume leaks .

If the plastic rod inside is broken , then you would need a new pump , OR buy a second hand pump for and refurbish it as above.
