Brake shudder at speed

Good that you got it sorted.

I don't want to goat you any further, as I am sure you have learnt an expensive lesson here, so the below is not directed at you personally :=):

But what thickness are the discs at the moment, how much life did you have to remove.

Something is still wrong, as the discs should of never required a skim in the first place.

If you have any problems say in the next 1000km, please let us know.

My personal experience is that the Messi pads are just too hard, and history will repeat itself.

Further, what more or less was the costs for the discs and the pads ?

Hi,

I was also worried about the same thing - In total (both skimming's) about 0.2mm was removed from each side of the disc. I spoke to the owner at Graaff Brakes and in his experience a disc can be skimmed 3 to 4 times if it is done with every brake pad change, depending on how hard the brake pad was - and also take in to consideration normal wear on the disc.

But look, as you say I did in deed learn some valuable lessons from this experience - And trust me they wont happen again.

I also understand the Messi pads does have a hard compound - but when the problem first originated was the moment I drove out of my driveway after changing discs and pads - So it wasn't a case of the pads damaging the disc after x amount of km driven.

Also, after the first skimming some of the problem was resolved and it never got better or worse. When I did the skimming again yesterday I could feel an instant improvement and it's 100% now.

But I will continue to monitor and should any related issues arise again I will let you guys know.

From what I can recall is that I paid in the region fo R1400 for the 2 front discs @ Goldwagen, and the Messi pads was between R700 and R800 for the set.

:bravo:

glad its all sorted out without you having to replace all the shocks, control arm bushes and forking out again for new oem discs...and pads

sometimes it pays off to keep on persevering and not doing what the Google mechanics say.

Hi Everyone

I had the very same experience on my 2002 E39 525.
My car was misfiring over long distance and my brake ware indicator was on so i decided to send the car to Lyndhurst BMW which is around the corner from me.
While the cars was there i was contacted and told that the right side control arm was worn and it would cost R5k to replace and repair extras. I said leave it for now
After 3 days got vehicle back and brakes were very noisy sounded like a train seriously! The following day started car after reversing out my brakes failed went rock hard and car would not stop, took car back to BMW..
After another 2 days car was ready for collection Drove out the garage and noise was back!!! after testing vehicle with BMW "tester" pads were faulty and replaced with new ones, great got car back next day all was good until over 100km/h brake shudder not through steering wheel could feel it in the car...it was never there before???
Now by this time I was gatvol..phoned the dealer and well they said bring the car back I told them to go @#$% themselves...
Took the car to my friend in vanderbylpark skimmed the disks one was warped..shudder is still there but coming through steering wheel now.. i think it might be balancing and the control arm or skimming was not good enough!!..Going to take it to be checked will post outcome.
