Brake pad warning sensor?

Hi guys,

I have changed the brake pads on my X5 myself and I have connected the existing wear warning sensor to the new pads (Left side only) right side didn't have one.

The warning doesn't go away and the sensor isn't touching any metal, I've checked.

Do I need to buy a new sensor, like the agents say for another R300, or is there an easier solution?

Cfroc,

Easily testable using a Continuity tester. That sensor is actually just a switch, and when the pad disc rubs against the sensor, it destroy's it, causing it to go open circuit, so check if its a closed circuit, and you should be fine

It could be possible that on the X, you may need to have the warning reset on the computer, if that is the case, pop past on a sat, and I'll do it for you.

I do know hoever that the E34 does not require a computer reset, so that is quite odd, also sensors for the E34 is R115, so the X cannot be that differant.

You can also if you know the pads are good, cut off the sensors, and join the wires... closed circuit :)

Hi Zaleonardz,

Thanks for the advice. I eventually thought of the same thing, join the wires and keep book of when the pads were replaced and keep a visual check on the pads. Must say, when the warning came on while I was driving back from Natal for a week's holiday, and I replaced it tonight, there was only about 2mm left on the old pads!!!

Anyways, how is the 540 doing?

if the light came on in the first place, the sensor will be screwed.. gotta replace it me reckons.. because it wears thru the little copper sleave over the sensor

Makes sense clutchy

Cfroc, 540 is my daily drive at the moment, i just have to build up some capital again before I take on my next major project, which will be suspension front & back, so it handles terrible at the moment, but I drive her daily, as she is scwheeet. :)

I don't rely on these sensors at all, they are not always reliable. Its better to know your car and check at service intervals.

IF the light came on , means the sensor is used, replace the sensor with a new one , turn key to position 2 , leave it like that for i think 45 seconds and the light goes off . i think its about R180 at the dealerS.

Wish i could find someplace that sells these cheaper.

Yeah, I don't know what happened to the prices, cause I still paid R265 for one and then when I got these ones that I am selling now, the rate was R225. Looks like Brake sensor cables wouldn't have a good record on the JSE...

Mine still includes postage, so you save a trip to the dealer :)
