Brake Pad Warning Light

Hi All,

This morning my brake pad warning light came on as I was on my way to work, my rear brake pads needs to be replaced on me E90 320d,

Is this an "early warning" notification meaning I can still go a month or two before I replace the pads or do I need to get them replaced ASAP?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If I'm not mistaken when the light is triggered it means you've worn down to the sensor already. Best to have them replaced.

The brake wear sensor has been worn thru, it has severed the fine continuous circuit, (continuous loop circuit = lights out, broken loop = light activation)

The sensor is fitted in such a way, that there is between 5 to 15% of the pad actually still remaining.

so at your own risk, a few more days here or there, esspecially if it is on the rear brakes, wont make a big difference, your back brakes only do about 20-30% of the braking work, the front is the ones that take the brunt of braking action.

(if it were me IMHO....I would schedule a brake change soon, but if you cannot find the time and place and money in the next week or three, it probably wont be disaster yet)

but

this was your final warning, the next you will hear is a definitive metal scraping sound, as the rivets that hold the pad material to the pad backing plate, start to scrape your disk....this is where it gets expensive

also remember that once the brake wear sensor has been worn thru (light activation), it is a throw away item, it cannot be re-used

Take a visual inspection of how much pad is left...

You need to do a visual inspection not only on the outside pad but the also the inside.

Generally once the warning light has appeared the pad has got to the replace stage but you will no doubt have to replace the sensor as well as you have worn the continous circuit through on the sensor as mentioned above.

Sh&t a brick

I am sure if you decided to go the DIY route, it would 1/2 that price

Hi. By my experience you safe as you still got around 6mm of pad on rear. You have enough time to pick up something online in better price, wait for deli and weekend off where you can fit it yourself. Don't do more than full tank or 2 on it becouse if this 6mm will gone you will finish not only with pad but also brake disks replace. Dot forget buy also new wear pad sensor. You need just one.
Check this one. Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272258622547
They more expensive but you will more than double milage on it before replace. I made already 20k with front fitted and still half way to finisih. Also rims are easy to clean as they are low dust.
Good luck
