Boot size of E39, E46 touring question...

Thank you guys, now in terms of maintenance... 325i specifically I assume servicing is more or less standard pricing, but what about specific items that are BMW specific?

What sort of issues can I expect to face? I need to get the Smart for sale and make progress with this but dont want to set my sights on a car that is not practical enough.

I firmly believe that the E39's are getting on a bit... The Touring we are currently driving (Nicks) has seen R60k in maintenance bills since he got it... Those are scary numbers! Is the E46 cheaper to maintain?

I think the 325i is the way to go... We do a lot of distance driving between Paarl and town and most driving is freeway...

My 325i touring with the 6spd and 18"s sits between 9.4-9.6lt/100km, never seen higher than 9.6lt/100km. In the summer months when aircon is on all the time it goes up to 9.9lt/100km.
As far as space goes I have fitted 10 semi slick 17" tires in the back.

Pic of the touring project I built for my close friend, front seats are Z4 Mcoupe.

60k Sounds a bit much? Would be nice to know what that was spent on?

Car had done 270000km's when I picked her up as a run about.
So the list of things that have been done to her:

Inspection 2 service and replacement of all wear and tear belts chains and gaskets
Upper control arm bushings - front
Lower control arm bushings - front
Shocks -front
Steering rack refurb
Steering track rod ends and bushes
Complete set of power steering piping
Radiator
Coolant piping
Prop coupling
Prop cv
Gear lever bushings
Gearbox refurb
Upper control arm bushings - rear
Lower control arm bushings - rear
Rear axle carrier bushings
Sway bar bushings
Shocks - rear
Tailgate switch
Alignment -4 times
SLS Bags
H&R Springs ( to delete the SLS bags)
Rear spring cups
Mid box - exhaust

To put it mildly the previous owner did NO wear and tear based preventative maintenance on the car.

It's a great car and even with its tiny motor it still ranks up their with my favorite drives, especially when I am dragging the fandamily around.

Herein lies the problem, the E39 drives like an utter beaut after all of this and to an extent I am going to be the same where possible with any Touring I get.

Besides, I have a stupid idea for this particular E46 as inspired by one of our clients today.... So affordable maintenance is key for me.

Thank you for the feedback guys. For those of you who do make use of the rear of your tourings... How difficult is it to get two front seats in there? In the E39 you just chuck em in, space looks a bit tighter in the E46?

Sean,
I knew she needed love when I bought her and frankly i am a phycho for making sure everything works on my cars. If you fall behind in just one small area it always comes back to bite you later and costs you massive amounts more than just fixing the first problem quickly. The lesson for most should be that buying an older car saves you nothing in the long run. You have to spend money to keep them reliable.

Cheers

dont get me wrong I fix everything on my car I just cant figure out what was needed and what was upgraded... for instance i did a 6 speed conversion on my car for about 20k... you could argue that the gearbox, clutch, prop and diff needed to be changed some time :)

The 325 is just awsome, even with a load and the aircon on she doesnt battle at all with power :praise:

Heres a pic of the consumption I got going to Durban in December

325i is alright , needs to be revved to be admired which I hardly do which also makes me feel kinda old . No low down torque in comparison to a 330i . Good daily commuter on highways , etc but not so great in town with heavy traffic . My consumption has gone up to 12.8 once and now is around 11.1l/100km and mainly 98% town driving .

Completely agreed. The stuff above was all maintenance. The only item that could be considered a possible upgrade was the springs. We however went this way due to the sh1t we had with the SLS in the rear. The upgrades have been:

M5 front bumper
BBS XK Wheels
Chrome delete
Interior trim repaint
Carpets

Still to be done:
Respray leather
Re-trim steering wheel

oh well... now that i have completely hijacked mikes thread i will sign off:)
