BMWi8 and i3 in dealer commercial.

Hey guys,

So, a dealership has approached me to shoot a cool educational \ tasteful advert for their i8 and i3 cars. I shoot this Saturday and have some ideas on what I want to do with the cars. The i3 car has a brief that I need to stick to, but the i8 has free reign. I can pretty much do anything as long as I don't break the car. So, any ideas on what you guys would like to see in the video. Feel free to drop ideas and I will try incorporate them into the i8 video. *No jumping the car over other cars.

I will be shooting these videos on my Dragon 6k Red camera and they will play inside the dealership that has approached me.

The brief for the i3 is pretty simple. I need to make short 10 - 20 second educational videos highlighting the different functionalities of the i3. This one is pretty easy to do as I just follow the brief they give me.

But as mentioned above, I can do what ever I like with the i8. I can make a short narrative, I can shoot an ad, or a review. I can just have cool shots of it sitting by itself in an underground parking, or I could have it staring at an older BMW showing the advancement in BMW technology. So... go mad and let me know what you guys would like to see in the video.

I am looking for anyone with an 8 series BMW. Would be cool to shoot with your car alongside the i8 to show how far BMW has come.

Any takers??

If you know of anyone with an 8 series and they would be interested in having their car in a video. PM me.

Shot.

For an i8, it would be appropriate if you dressed in a suit, got outta the house in the morning, have a Lambo/Ferrari parked in your driveway, look at it, have a smudge when you look at it, then all of a sudden have this massive grin on your face because the i8 is parked next to it. And a slogan in the lines of the future supercars are here. Unplug the car, get in and go. Lol I don't know, just wrote what came to mind.

These cameras are professional film cameras that Hollywood use on big feature films like Marvels Avengers, the Hobbit, Jurassic World or even the new Ridley Scott/Matt Damon film that just got released called the Martian. Even the TV series Mr. Robot, Game of Thrones, House of Cards and Dare Devil are shot on RED cameras. To see list of films shot on these cameras click here, and for a list of tv shows, click here.

The cameras are modular meaning you can buy many interchangeable parts depending on your production size, but you need to start with something called the Brain, which is essentially the camera body alone which houses the Digital sensor and all computing power needed to encode the 6k images. Bare in mind, you cannot just buy the brain, as by itself you cannot even power it on. You need to buy a monitor, an EVF, a way to power the camera, batteries, a module to insert SSD cards (hard drives) to write the massive 6k files to and many of the other external modules that you would require for your production? Need a 4k broadcast module, then buy one and attach it, need a wifi module, buy it and attach, need a side handle similar to DSLR handles, simply attach or remove. So the price for a camera like this depends on your requirements. The brain alone for this camera is around $26,000. At the current exchange rate that is R343,200.00 and at that price you cannot even start the camera. Bare in mind this is also the base module of the 6k camera, there is an M version which has faster computing at starts at $30,000 for just the brain. Then you get the big daddy version which is called Weapon and she starts at around $34,000 but you have to own the previous 6k Dragon to buy into Weapon, it is an upgrade, so you need to spend at least $26,000.00 to first own the 6k Dragon and then another $34,000 to upgrade to WEAPON. There is an 8k Weapon on the way but I would hate to see the price of that camera. The price for the bare basics to just fire up the camera and shoot with it starts at around $40,000.00 and a pro kit ends up in the region of $50,000.00.

See here -- RED.com

The amazing thing about RED is that these prices are actually very competitive for the film industry compared to what cameras used to cost. Before RED came along, for a 1080p digital film camera you would pay over R1 million for just the camera. Now you are getting a 6k camera with 16.5 stops of dynamic range, it is small and light and has amazing colour rendition for half of what the older Arri and Panaflex cameras used to go for. These cameras shoot in what is called RAW, similar to professional DSLR's, giving you all the information that the sensor is receiving and letting you decide how best to colour the image. The RED cameras have already superseded 35mm film as their goal was to be a digital replacement for 35mm film, and the only way to do that was to go 4k and up. PS. The RED company is the pioneers of 4k. They are the first cameras company to build a 4k camera back in 2006/7 and saw the future. The reason we have 4k TV's today is because of RED.

Here is a photo of my camera getting ready for a commercial shoot a few weeks ago -

I recently shot my new movie on three of these cameras in May/June this year. Here is a link to a teaser of the film, (this is a 1080p version, will upload a 4k version soon).
