Hi guys.
I am planing on maybe trading my car in for a Z4.

How reliable is a Z4? 2003-2005..
I would like to get the
3.0L
with around 60k to 90k on the clock...

Are spares easily avaiable?
Services expensive?
What should I look for when buying on, any specifics that i should pay attention?

Please give me all your opinions....

If I am not mistaken it uses the same M54B30 that is used in the e46 330i so parts for that should not be too hard to come by, and those engines are pretty reliable when well looked after.

As for other parts I am not too sure, I have not seen very many Z4's at scrapyards so finding second hand parts might be tough.

So you saying that aslong as i looked after it, it will be good?
:)
So it shares the engine with the e46 330i, but what about other parts?
I am sure it must sahre quite a bit with the e46s... ?

I think that any car that is well look after should be in good enough condition :), but I am actually referring to reliability once it is yours, if you keep the engine cool (never let it overheat), give it good oil and let the engine get up to temp before pushing it a bit, the engine will probably last for a very long time.

It might probably have the same brakes and gearbox as the e46's but other that I doubt whether there is anything more that it shares.

Great.
And what should i pay attention to before buying it?
Are there any parts that you know that gives issues?
What else should I check for?

It is all depending on the mileage of course, but the suspension bits like control arm bushes shock etc as they will usually be the original factory fitted stuff an might need replacing. Also if the car is around the 100k km mark you might want to look at doing replacing things like the water pump and the expansion tank, if of course it has not been done before. Changing stuff on the cooling system is very cheap insurance and will give some extra peace of mind. If it is a manual it might still be on the original clutch so that might need replacing, signs of this is a shudder when pulling away. If it is a auto make sure that the shifts are not overly jerky or that it doesn't have trouble selecting certain gears, this could point to possible auto box issues and worse case you will be looking at a gearbox rebuild (should only possibly be a problem at +150k km ). Other that this get the service history from the dealers this should give you an idea what was done on the car (or not done). Also you can send details of the car to coisman and he can check it out for you on enatis to see if there are any funnies in the car's history such as accidents number of owners etc. Also have the codes read and the car properly checked out by a pro.
