the x1 is a sorry excuse for a bmw its just bmw trying to cash in on the nissan QASHQAI idea
what im thinking of is a lowered smaller version of the X6 :pimp:
i really hope bmw go that direction

words cannot say how much i hate the x1...

My wife wants me to buy one... :hammerhead:
took the better of part of a week to prove to her that a 3-series touring is the better option :)
So I guess my next bm is a "passion wagon"

Okay, in terms of styling and looks, for me the E46 and E39 was/is very pleasing on the eye! When the E90 first came out I didn't like, but then one gets use to the newer shape and design, and now I have one - and the E92 is great too.

When the now previous 7 Series came out it just looked silly, then the now outgoing 5 Series like the E90 came out and they were more "acceptable" initially - I now like the 3 and 5 series. The 6 Series has also grown a little on me.

Now, the new 5 Series looks very nice, nicest of the new BMWs as far as I am concerned! However, the 5 Series GT and new 7 Series are both horrid - the glaringly big nostrils really doesn't look good! And this is where the X1 falls badly for me - those kicked in the face nostrils makes it look very ugly! And it's a pointless vehicle - who IS really going to use it as a 4x4 off-roader which it clearly isn't optimised for?

The X3 and X5 serves the 4x4 scene better although I personally also wouldn't going off-roading with them (X3 in particular), the X6 looks nice but isn't very practical and loses a fair bit of interior space.

Oh, and not sure if you guys saw the new 3 Series concept car in CAR mag a months back - scary stuff! Blaasoppie fish is the only way I could best describe that new nose! It's a pity that "ugly" seems to prevail in the newer designs - but who knows, might grow on me as time goes on... If they follow the new 5 Series recipe a bit more then things should be looking good! :)

Of course this is what my eyes see - others may see things differently! :mmm:

is this the 3 series?

i dont think it looks that bad it has some huge nostrils but i think it works with the design over all and people will get used to them what i like about it is the proportion of the windows to the body :) makes it look way flatter than the e90

hehe, different strokes for different folks. Philip, I hear you, but feel slightly different. I liked the e60 (outgoing 5) and the 6 series very much, as they were so...different. They made a statement. For that reason alone, the new 5 puts me to sleep. I've yet to see one in real life properly (only glimpsed one once), but the photos look like BMW just went 50/50 between the 3 and 7, which ruins german car design tradition...well in my theory anyway.

I'll elaborate if anyone's interested, but I've always believe the middle class is the odd-ball, for good reason.

As far as the xi models are concerend, I think they're pointless in this coutry. We don't suffer from snow-drenched roads or black ice (well, maybe now and then I suppose), and having all that extra weight, slower off the line speed and 'too much' traction in corners, while paying so much more for it, seems pretty daft if you ask me.

If you want more grip, get more surface conact - I struggle to lose grip in my car unless I really want to, and frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Plus, people here are so prone to discuss fuel consumption as one of the most vital characteristics of a car, that I hardly think the xi models would sell here, they must be heavier on the holy juice.

I think BMW knows it's market, which brings me to another point. BMW sells great in SA, and introducing a new model would add so many costs and expenses, which frankly they don't need to incur. So financially, I don't think it'll be worth their efforts.

my 2 cents

Oh, and Maranor, I think that was a concept for the 5, but I might be mistaken.

Maybe the new 3 Series concept has been updated, because the pic above does show a better looking "new" 3 Series! This is what was in CAR mag a few months ago:

Well the E60 I do like, initially wasn't mad about it but it very much grew on me! I think when I saw the M5 it made the rest of the 5 Series make sense. M6 yes is nice from the point of view that they are less commonly seen on the road! I must say, I think I know what you mean regarding the new 5 Series - it does look like they opted for the more gentle approach, like they were playing it safe rather than bold... But from the photos that I have seen I still think it looks nice - haven't seen one in the flesh yet...

BMW for good RWD characteristics - Audi Quattro if AWD is what you want...

The first one looks like "sneezy" or something! LOL

The last one does have potential though - especially from that angle...

:mmm: If you get the masks...
I've already got the gun... :mmm:
then we can "Skiet die bliksems!" at the gate
and get some :)

Well as second prize, I know they have a black E90 328i LHD in location at the mo... :mmm: Maybe that could be a nice alternative to that other E90 you were considering...

And I'll finally get my Alpine White manual... :)

I drove the X1 1.8 the other day...
it drives allot like a 3 series, just you sit up a bit higher.
funny enough the one i drove only had the rear wheel drive, not the x-drive.
If bmw launhes a model in the x-range, then all should be x-drives.

Nice discussion going here and so many good points raised by everyone. My two friends have been waiting for the X1 awd diesels to be released for awhile. We attended the launch of the X1 earlier this year and ordered a stunning black and white ones. We first took a drive in the previous model X3 and then test drove one of the demo models X1's but it was not xdrive.

Anyway, both cars were collected about a month ago and i can tell you i am personally itching to get one. I drove the black X 1 xdrive diesel and it feels as competent as any e90 3 series sedan. Very composed on the stellenbosch farm roads and gravel bits are a piece of cake. It can do restricted off roading but it is not an offroader in the true sense. Ground clearance is ok for some beach fun but major sand dunes would suck it in. Anyway on the road it handles with poise and the diesel is frugal.

Nice feedback Twinz.
Do you know if the xdrive can be set to favour front or rear wheels like the x models overseas??
