I have a M-sport 3.0d X5 2009, the consumption around town is in the region of 13.6l/100km. Is this about right, seems quite high compared to test results in car magazine etc?

Yes, that does seem very high..

I'm cousin's X5 sits at around 8.5 - 9.0 urban.... and about 7.2 long distances. Also a 3.0d. M-Sport

Maybe you should get it checked out. Unless you drive like an F1 driver?

Sound right for town/city driving. Remember that this vehicle weighs over 2 tonnes, so even though it feels nimble, it has some weight to carry around.

BTW, what are you getting on the open road - should be around 8l/100KM at the legal limit.

Also, try different brands of 50 PPM diesel - heard that there is quite a variation in consumption, but unsure about this :dunno: .

auto box...sounds right, dont believe everything you see mate.
thats a big machine all the same. on the open road it will def drop to below 10 if u cruz 120 and not get heavy footed..

Is your temperature guage stuck at the 12'o'clock position (after it has warmed up of course)? If it is not, I know what the problem is...

Failing that, it is either because of lead-foot disease, or short trips that do not allow the car to get to operating temp, or a lot of the journey is done with the engine below operating temp...

Thanks for the replies much appreciated. @ P1000 when you say temperature gauge stuck at 12 o clock position? The vehicle does not have a temp gauge on the dash.

Also have not been driving heavy footed, the average consumption definatly drops on the open but no where near 8 mor in the region of 10l/100km.

hi there, new to this site.

I thought that i was the only one haveing a fuel consupmtion issue. i also have a 2009, Xdrive X5 m-pack. For short runs i get a fuel consumption of close to 14l/100kms. long distance i get about 9l/100kms (avg to durbs). I wish that there is something that i can do about it.

My tyres also seem to last me in the region of 20k kms.
This car is high maintenaince.

I have the X6 35d (2.7 tons) and i gun it alot and like to feel the torque when i drive and ive never been higher than 11.2, if i take it kinda easy town driving its around 10.3

long trip i run around 7.2 - 7.5

What size tank do you have and how many km's do you get on a tank?

@ Scouse - Not sure what size tank i have - am assuming close to 75L. I have yet to reach 900 on the open road and 750 on local runs. In 2002 when i had my 320d i often usd to get 850 - 900 kms (depending on the diesel i filled) on a 63l tank.

I have a 2003 E53 X5 diesel and do not do a lot of town driving, mostly from Hermanus to Cape Town which is a mix of 100 and 120 and i stick to the speed limit like glue. Filled up at Strand and drove to Bellville, back home, again to Bellville and back home with some driving around here. Done about 500km and the guage is still half (about 48l left in tank). Average on the BC says 11,2 km/l and it is quite accurate - have checked it against filling tank to tank) In town driving it will go down to about 9km/l. I drive like a 60 year old and try to get as much as i can from a litre of diesel. Try and mix 50 and 500ppm. Hope to go on a nice 4500km trip in two weeks time and will give feedback on consumption. I have often seen over 1000km on the range, especially on the open road! (Went down quickly and checked the distance and range - distance driven was 477km and range reads 639km)
