BMW have never made good V8s.

Sorry Alex I'm also going to give you a go :)

If you said "you think" BMW don't make good V8's I would've left you alone, but a quick google search reveals how many awards the BMW V8's have won over the years for best engine of the year and several others. That doesn't come easy.

Compared to all the other manufacturers BMW's V8s are pretty good.

I digress,

@KyleCT I was going to mention that if fuel wasn't a concern then the V8 will make you feel and enjoy the car a lot more than the 3.0D.

Congratulations!

Besides all the awards, just look at all the 540s and 740s for sale.

The average mileage is 300k. That alone speaks volumes of the durability.

I have a E70 4.8i as my daily driver, with 184000 trouble-free kilometers.

There are lots of comments here about supposed problems with BMW V8's, most likely from people who have never owned a BMW V8 before.:cartel:

Even the air suspension is not so problematic on the E70's like on the E53's. The E70 4.8i only has rear air bellows, mine lasted about 170000 before the first one started a slow leak. It is an easy DIY to replace the bellows for about R4k each. The air ride is just superior in every way and I would not want the car without it.

If the V8 starts using a bit of oil or smokes at idle, replace the crankcase vent valves (R200 each, one on each side of the V8 banks), again an easy DIY. If you can replace an air filter, you can replace the crankcase vent valves.

The long-term fuel consumption on my car over the entire time I owned it, is 15.5 l/100km. I pay the fuel bill with a smile for the effortless power from the useless and troublesome V8 in my car.:YesNo:

Also want to chime in on the v8 issue. Sure they have some issues. Mine is going for open heart surgery at BMW in Jan (alternator bracket, alternator, head gaskets and valve stems) to fix oil issues. Cost is just over r22k and comes with BMWs warranty. BMW knows how to build V8 engines. It just doesn't know how to build V8 engines that don't leak oil...from everywhere :) V8s sell for little because of the piss poor fuel economy but if you look after it it will look after you. My tracked (not onboard) fuel economy is now below 17l/100km. Having owned a number of them I can say beyond doubt that Nothing beats the thrill if a big 'ol V8. (Except, as ZALeonard puts it, a turbocharged V8)

Im sorry but not even the e53 have issues with the air suspension. Mine is o 180K and the suspension haven't given me any issues.

Things give issues when not cared for, and that's the bottom line.
